MARYLAND DCDL SURVEY UPDATE
Happy Winter!

The Maryland DCDL has been out in the community statewide to inform the community of the resources it provides, to distribute the library website survey, and to share information on ASL and Deaf friendly library sponsored programs available at various County library systems.

Over 300 people from all regions of Maryland responded to the Maryland DCDL survey. The survey is one of the many different ways library staff collect data that will help best determine subject priorities for its new website. We thank you for your participation.

CLERC - GALLAUDET WEEK | December 2 - 8
In December 1974, the District of Columbia Public Library established Clerc-Gallaudet Week to celebrate the birth anniversaries of pioneers Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (December 10, 1787) and Laurent Clerc (December 26, 1785). Annually, Clerc-Gallaudet Week is celebrated during the first full week in December.

Several gems written by Maryland Deaf authors and editors are available in e-book format and can be downloaded through the Maryland's Digital eLibrary Consortium , better known as Overdrive . To borrow these e-books, all you need is a current library card from any of the 24 Maryland County library systems . Some of these titles may also be available in print from your library system or can be obtained through MARINA (Maryland statewide interlibrary loan service).

Here are some suggestions of materials on Laurent Clerc, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, or other prominent members of the early American Deaf Community.
New to Maryland Deaf Culture Digital Library!!

WHERE HAS MARYLAND DCDL BEEN?
Maryland DCDL Staff Members standing at a booth shown at the Gallaudet University Homecoming Booth, October 2018.
In the past few months, the staff of the Maryland DCDL has attended several events across the state of Maryland and Washington, D.C. During August and September, we showcased our resources through the Community Fun Expo in Frederick and National Night Out in Germantown. We also featured our resources and gave presentations at two events held at the Crofton and Towson Libraries. We also were sighted at the Deafopia Expo in Washington, D.C. in late September.

Between October and November, we displayed our resources at Montgomery County Public Libraries Staff Development Day , Gallaudet University Homecoming in Washington, D.C., and at the Maryland Governor's Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MD ODHH) Town Hall meeting in Baltimore, MD.

Maryland DCDL is also committed to networking with members of our community. We attended the TDI, Inc. 50th Anniversary Gala in Bethesda, Maryland on October 25, and the 4th Annual Discovering Deaf Worlds (DDW) Gala in Washington, D.C. on November 3. Both team members networked and made connections with people from all over the United States as well as those from other countries.

We also presented a talk about Maryland DCDL at the Montgomery County Public Libraries' Accessibility Service Advisory Committee on Saturday, November 3.

We are currently scheduling outreach activities for the coming months.

If you would like invite Maryland DCDL for a presentation or to exhibit our resources, contact us at MarylandDCDL@montgomerycountymd.gov .

NEW DEAF HISTORY FILMS
PRODUCED BY TDI
" LifeLine for Deaf People," a new TDI film documentary, was produced by TDI's former Executive Director, Al Sonnenstrahl and edited by one of the original TDI agents, Steve Brenner. The film discusses the history of TTYs.
TDI also filmed " TDI Documentary: 50 years of Shaping an Accessible World, " which reviews the history of TDI from 1968-2018 and recognizes TDI's contributions to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Both film documentaries can also be found on our website under the Deaf History section.
(Note: TDI owns both films. We are only sharing these films for informational purposes.)

CALL FOR AUTHORS ,
PERFORMERS & PRESENTERS
Maryland DCDL is currently compiling a directory of authors, performers, and presenters who value our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community through American Sign Language, Art, Deaf Culture, Deaf History, and so much more.

Once completed, this directory will be distributed to academic, government and public libraries in Maryland as a resource for library staff to use when planning library programs for their communities.

We need your help.

If you know of authors, performers or presenters from the United States or Canada interested in presenting or performing in Maryland, please share our questionnaire with them.

We also welcome suggestions via email .
