Part One B asic Certification training  provides an overall knowledge of the Health and Safety Legislation that applies to most workplaces.

Part Two Workplace Specific  Training
Part Two Workplace Specific  Certification training focuses on the significant hazards in your workplace and how to assess, control and/or eliminate them.

IN THE NEWS
Government to Review Public Holiday Pay Rules
May 7, 2018

Ontario will conduct a review of the public holiday system under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA) following feedback and discussions with stakeholders. The Changing Workplaces Review (CWR) found that public holiday rules were the source of the most complaints under the ESA and needed to be simplified.

May 1, 2018

Saputo Dairy Products Canada GP was fined $150,000 for failing to ensure the cheese-cutter machine had a proper guard to prevent access  to the cutter's pinch point . The court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act.

Better Health Care, More Support for Ontario Nurses

April 20, 2018

Ontario is making major investments in the health care system to address capacity issues, reduce wait times and provide better care closer to home. Ontario is increasing funding for the hospital sector with an $822 million investment in 2018-19. This increase, in addition to the over 3 per cent provided last year, is allowing hospitals to expand essential services, provide faster access to critical care and priority procedures, and invest with precision in the specific needs of their patients and community.

Ontario Inspecting Workplaces to Protect Workers' Health and Safety
April 20, 2018

Ontario is conducting more than two dozen inspection blitzes in 2018-2019 to ensure employers are meeting health, safety, and employment standards at workplaces across the province. Enforcement staff will visit workplaces such as warehouses, "big box" retail, grocery stores, chemical manufacturing plants, pulp and paper mills, hotels, golf courses, health care organizations, mines, and construction projects. Sectors with new and young workers, temporary help, vulnerable workers, and a history of low compliance will be targeted.

The Summer Student Onboarding Checklist

Enhance work experience and provide the tools they need.

Properly onboarding new and young workers - whether they are long-term or temporary - is crucial in fostering a safe work environment . Young workers are three times more likely to be injured or killed within the first month of employment than all other workers.

If you're hiring new and young workers this summer, complete our orientation checklist to ensure all new workers have the skills and knowledge they need to return home from work safe and healthy.

Working at Heights

Refresher training now available.

Working at Heights training requirements came into force on April 1, 2015, requiring employers to ensure that workers who work with their feet 10 feet or more off of the ground successfully complete a Working at Heights training. In order to maintain the validity of training, learners must take refresher training within three (3) years of the date they successfully completed the training program.

Those workers trained in 2015 will now require the Working at Heights refresher training. The minimum duration of the refresher training is three-and-a-half (3.5) hours of training which must be delivered face-to-face.

Invasive Plants - Wild Parsnip
Protect your outdoor workers from hazardous plants.
Wild parsnip is a growing concern in Ontario and in Kingston. This invasive weed is often found in roadside ditches, uncultivated land - and along nature trails.

T he sap of the plant contains chemicals that can irritate skin and eyes and cause severe burning and blistering on affected skin when it is exposed to the sun. The blisters, which can result in permanent scarring, may occur one to two days after contact with the plant.

Employees who work in certain outdoor areas are at risk of exposure. Employers should ensure outdoor workers become familiar with these plants to protect themselves.

Equal Pay for Equal Work
As of April 1, 2018, new rules on equal pay for equal work came into effect.

The new legislation is in place to ensure an employer does not pay an employee at a rate of pay less than another employee because of gender, race, employment status or any prohibited grounds, when:

  • They perform substantially the same job in the same establishment;
  • The work requires substantially the same skill, effort, and responsibility; and
  • The work is performed under similar working conditions.

This applies to all employees, whether they are full-time, part-time, casual, permanent, temporary, seasonal, or temporary help agency employees.

However, employees can be paid different rates of pay. Click here for more information on the rules regarding Equal Pay for Equal Work.
