Children's and Family Ministries At St. Andrew's

Dear Families,

Since it was Epiphany last Sunday, we didn't explore the narrative surrounding the Baptism of our Lord which was also on the lectionary. But for children, the baptism narrative is a powerful entry point into a deeper understanding of Jesus's life and ministry.

Something really important happens just after Jesus is baptized, a voice from heaven proclaims "you are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." (Mark 1:11)

Every child knows what it is like to long for parental approval. Most know, even if they can't articulate it, how motivating it is to be told, "I am proud of you." Especially if they are facing a difficult task or challenge.

I encourage you to explore these concepts with your children this weekend. Here is a beautiful discussion guide, with the reading from Mark included. And here is a fun dove and water activity that is appropriate for even young children. I hope you and your children enjoy exploring how proud God is of them for being their own unique selves.
Much Love,
-Erin

PS, if you didn't get to hear Mother Brenda's sermon last week, she discusses how we are ordained into lay ministry at our baptism and what that means for our faith journey. You can watch it here.

This week we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. You can watch his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech here, or if you prefer you can read it here. And here is a family discussion guide based on the speech.

This week's psalm 139 is about how wonderfully God made us and how deeply God know us and loves us -all of us! Here is the psalm and a family discussion, and here is a coloring page based on the psalm.

Who is God?
by Rev. Danae M. Ashley

"God loves us without measure—even more than the person who loves us the most. We are good enough for God, right here and right now, and if that is not transforming, I do not know what is. " read more
