The Association for New Canadians (ANC) is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to the delivery of settlement and integration services for immigrants and refugees living across Newfoundland and Labrador. For nearly 40 years, the Association has delivered programs and services that support all aspects of immigrant integration, ranging from settlement information and orientation, to language learning, skills development and employment.

Are you a newcomer located outside the Avalon Peninsula seeking settlement and integration supports? Contact one of our recently-launched Satellite Offices!

You can access an array of supports, including general settlement/orientation supports (e.g., Needs Assessments, Settlement Planning, Community Bridging and Connections, etc.), as well as referrals to internal and external programs designed to support newcomer integration.

Services are also available to help support:
  • Co-Sponsor Groups and their private sponsorship efforts to bring refugees to the province, including assistance during the one-year settlement period
  • Designated Employers and Endorsed Employees under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP)

Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) Support Services
Supports for Designated Employers:

The Association for New Canadians supports the long-term needs of employers and business owners participating in the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. 

In addition to providing assistance in completing AIPP applications (for those businesses seeking designation), the Association helps ensure a smooth settlement process for endorsed employees and their families by providing:

  • Information and orientations about life in Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the local community
  • Employment and career services for endorsed employees’ family members
  • Assistance in enrolling children in school
  • Assistance in completing applications for mandatory Provincial and Federal Programs (such as MCP, SIN, etc.)
  • Access to English as a Second Language Training (e.g., on-site, distance/outreach, etc.) 
  • Access to social and volunteer opportunities in their community
  • Access to health supports (e.g., locating a pharmacist, family physician, etc.)
  • Assistance in completing Permanent Residence applications 

These services are offered without cost to eligible permanent and temporary residents.

As an endorsed employee participating in the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program, the Association for New Canadians works to support you and your family’s long-term needs by providing:

Career and Employment Supports for Newcomers
The ANC's Career and Employment Division, AXIS, serves newcomers eligible to work in Canada, including Government-Assisted Refugees, Permanent Residents, Provincial Nominees, and International Students, as well as International Medical Graduates/Health Care Professionals and their families.

AXIS has developed a wide range of customized, client-focused programs and services to assist newcomers with labour market integration. Upon completion of a comprehensive needs assessment and a mapping of individual career pathways, job seekers are provided with the opportunity to participate in a variety of pre-employment preparation and career-focused communications training programs, bridge-to-work programs, as well as entrepreneurial start-up and business growth programs.

Learn English from Anywhere in the Province

Outreach ESL Tutor Program – Are you a Permanent Resident or Provincial Nominee living outside the St. John’s area looking for ESL training? The ANC offers one-on-one tutoring for 5 hours per week.

LINC Home Study Program – This distance ESL program is offered to eligible newcomers who wish to improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.

Government-Assisted Refugee (GAR) Update
As of September 28, 2018, the ANC has helped welcome and resettle 167 GARs arriving in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Visit from Minister Hawkins
The ANC was pleased to welcome the Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour as well as Scott Reid, MHA, St. George's - Stephenville East to its Corner Brook Satellite Office in August!
2018 Summer Programming
Every year, the ANC’s Children and Youth Division delivers summer programming designed to support newcomer children and youth in the St. John’s area.

This year, the ANC delivered three concurrent Summer Programs designed to support newcomer children, youth, and their parents: Healthy Lifestyle Summer Initiative, ESL Summer Program for Newcomer Children, and Summer Enrichment Program for Newcomer Youth. These programs supported approximately 85 refugee and immigrant participants while connecting an additional 100 with external programming in the community.
Celebrating Canadian Multiculturalism Day and Canada Day
The ANC hosted its 6th annual Multicultural Family Sports Day to celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Day and Canada Day.

The event included a variety of family-oriented games, sports, and activities, including face-painting, magic, bouncy castles, temporary tattoos, as well as snacks and refreshments.

The ANC would like to extend a sincere thanks to all funders who helped make this year's Multicultural Family Sports Day such a great success: Government of Canada, Scotiabank, Harris Ryan Chartered Accountants, VOCM Cares Foundation, and Nalcor Energy Capitol Social Club.

We would also like to thank the following for their participation and contributions: the City of St. John's REAL Program, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), Parks Canada, and Cricket NL.
World Refugee Day
Building on the success of the 2016 “My Eyes, My Voice” and 2017 “Home is Where the Heart Feels” Photo Exhibitions, the ANC, in partnership with the City of St. John’s, hosted a third annual exhibition to mark the United Nations’ (UN) World Refugee Day on June 20.

The public exhibition at St. John’s City Hall highlighted refugees living in the St. John’s area and included the development and display of a series of photographs highlighting their stories of integration in Newfoundland and Labrador. 
Volunteer with the ANC
The Association is seeking volunteers to support the following programs:
After-School Program

Volunteers provide assistance for at least one hour per week during various times throughout the week. This Program is delivered at 5 schools in the St. John's area and provides homework support to newcomer children in a group environment as well as the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational and social activities. Volunteers assist by:  
  • Aiding children with homework, assignments, and projects;
  • Participating in group activities; and/or,
  • Helping with event logistics (setting up, etc.). 
Seniors Group (55+)

This program is designed to provide newcomer seniors with programming to help support their settlement, integration, and inclusion while also providing them with opportunities to develop their communication skills, and to improve their confidence and self-esteem as they transition into their new environment. Volunteers assist by:
  • Facilitating conversations with participants;
  • Participating in group activities;
  • Asking questions and sharing information; and, 
  • Assisting participants with vocabulary and pronunciation.
ESL Conversation Circle Program

The ESL Conversation Circle Program provides ESL learners with the opportunity to engage with native English speakers on a variety of topics in a friendly, relaxed environment. Volunteers assist by:
  • Facilitating a conversation with 1-3 students;
  • Asking questions and sharing information; and, 
  • Assisting students with vocabulary and pronunciation.

Annual Diversity Summit
Organized by the Association for New Canadians in collaboration with a broad range of partners, funders, and sponsors, the annual Diversity Summit is a multi-day conference that brings together industry leaders and community stakeholders from across Newfoundland and Labrador to discuss the opportunities and challenges of immigration and growing cultural diversity in the province.

Diversity Summit 2018 will focus on diversity in the tech sector. Building on BDC’s Small Business Week theme of digitization in business, the Summit will draw together three broad topic areas – Digitize, Diversify, Connect – and will serve as a pan-provincial forum to explore the intersection of technology, diversity, and the small-business economy.

It will take place as part of Small Business Week in Corner Brook from October 15-17, 2018.
