20th Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk - It's time again for the North Brothers Ford 5K Fun Run event in the City of Westland and this year we're celebrating 20 years! We're honored to once again host the event to benefit the Karmanos Cancer Institute - a wonderful cancer research, education, and treatment center in Detroit. The 20th Annual 5K Fun run/Walk will kick off at the Westland Farmer's Market building at 1901 N Carlson St on Saturday, May 12th at 9:00am with registration beginning at 8:00am. Permit Free Garage Sale Weekend Extended -   Due to inclement weather on the original permit free garage sale weekend, it has been extended to Saturday, May 12 through Sunday, May 13.  Residents can use this opportunity to host a garage/yard sale and avoid the normal fee that is required.  As an added bonus incentive to participate, and to help your sale be successful, the City will help promote your sale for FREE on our website. Visit  www.cityofwestland.com  to register your sale. You can even list what types of items you are selling to bring interested buyers right to you. 

Wild About Youth Works Job Fair - On Monday, May 14, Wild About Youth Works program participants will put their skills to the test at the Job Fair at Westland City Hall. Business owners and managers are encouraged to sign up to participate in the job fair for a chance to meet a large pool of talented young applicants. Businesses will benefit from participating in the program by attaining young, tech savvy employees who have had initial general training and education.  If you know a young person looking for summer employment please encourage them to sign up on www.cityofwestland.com. For more information, please contact Economic Development Director, Charles House at (734)793-9300.

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location:

Housing Commission
  • The Housing Commission will meet on Tuesday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Jefferson Barnes Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey Rd.
Zoning Board of Appeals
  • The Zoning Board of Appeals will meet on Wednesday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
Commodities Distribution - The City of Westland will be distributing surplus Federal food on  Thursday, May 17 from 10:00 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey Rd.  Further questions may  be answered by calling the Jefferson Barns Community Center's surplus food hotline at (734) 595-0366.   All residents north of Michigan Avenue will pick up their commodities between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Free Bulk Item Drop Off Day - Back by popular demand, the City of Westland is once again offering a FREE Drop Off event to dispose of large bulk items that won't fit in your curbside trash cart on Saturday, May 19th from 8:00 a.m.- 2 p.m. Simply bring your items to DPS Yard along with proof of residency; to dispose of old unwanted items. Acceptable items include carpet and padding, major and small appliances, furniture and televisions and much more. If any resident needs assistance to participate in this program because of age or physical disability, please call the Mayor's Office at 734-467-3200 in order to make arrangements. 

Historical Museum Grand Re-opening -  On Saturday, May 19 at 11:00 a.m. the Westland Historic Village Park, located at 857 N. Wayne Rd. will host the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Wayne County Poorhouse, General Hospital and Village of Eloise.  The ceremony  will include guest speakers, presentations and the official cutting of the ribbon.  Light refreshments will be available.  Tours of our complex will begin at 12 p.m. and will be conducted  every 15 to 20 minutes. Tours last approximately 1 hour.  If you are unable to attend this event, the Westland Historic Village is open every Saturday from 1 to 4 PM, except holiday weekends.
Parking for visitors will be available at John Glenn in the East Lot. Nankin Transit will shuttle visitors between John Glenn and Westland Historic Village Park.

Rouge Rescue - Each spring Friends of the Rouge, in partnership with Rouge communities, brings volunteers together from across the watershed to work toward the common goal of improving the Rouge River for generations to come. This year's annual river clean up event will be held on Saturday, May 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. For information on volunteer locations and how to get involved, visit their  website or call Bill Craig at 248-476-5127.
