ATIXA Tip of the Week

Attorneys in the Mix

Tip of the Week authored by Daniel C. Swinton, J.D., Ed.D., ATIXA Associate Executive Director

A frequent concern we hear from participants in our training programs and on the member listserve is about the involvement of attorneys in disciplinary hearings and investigation proceedings. While many processes allow the parties to have an attorney as their advisor, a person accused of sexual violence is more likely than their accuser to hire an attorney.  This imbalance feeds a fear that allowing attorneys to serve as advisors in the process will have a chilling effect on victims and will skew the process towards the accused. Are Title IX and the Campus SaVE Act moving towards requiring institutions to provide identicial advisors to all students during the process? Read more of ATIXA's thoughts here.

Template Language Available from ATIXA

How can your Campus Comply with the Campus SaVE Act?

By now, many of you have taken a look at the VAWA Reauthorization section known as the Campus SaVE Act. This act is now law, with enforcement expected to kick in a year from now. This amendment changes the Clery Act in ways much more substantive than previous amendments.

We have a shortcut to SaVE you time. We have created template language to satisfy all of the new SaVE Act disclosure requirements (at least as best we can decipher them before regulations are issued). It's eight pages of model language containing policy and procedure information outlined by Title IX and Campus SaVE. This template is available from The NCHERM Group for $249. To purchase our SaVE disclosure template, visit our online store or contact Alisha DiGiandomenico at (610) 644-3387. Please note that our template only includes the new ASR required disclosures, not all updates that were made by SaVE, such as those involving hate crimes statistics and hate crime categories.

Contact Marianne Price, Director of Educational Programs, for the ATIXA member discount code.

ATIXA’s Title IX/SaVE Act Prevention & Training Checklist is a life-saver and time-saver that distills all the new and existing requirements into a single, detailed and copiously researched chart that will help institutions examine current policies and procedures and develop a comprehensive training plan for faculty, staff and students. We know how valuable this tool is for your campus. For additional details on the checklist and to share this resource with your colleagues and professional networks, visit our website here.
