Maryland Celebrates World Down 
Syndrome Day March 21st

First Lady Yumi Hogan joined in the festivities recognizing World Down Syndrome Day. The event at the state  house was sponsored by the  Maryland Catholic Conference (MCC)  and  T he Arc Maryland .   Greg Snyder, Associate Director of Communications & Engagement MCC, and Ande Kolp, Executive Director of The Arc Maryland, accepted a Governor's Proclamation from the First Lady.


St. Elizabeth School Helps Students with Disabilities go the Distance
Barbara Krupiarz and Secretary Carol Beatty received a warm welcome from  Admissions Coordinator Judy Malin, Principal Erin Upton and Executive Director Michael Thorne.  St. Elizabeth School.

The First Lady and Secretary Beatty recently visited  The Katherine Thomas School, part of the Treatment and Learning Centers. The art students enthusiastically shared their work with Mrs. Hogan.

Later, the First Lady, Secretary Beatty, and MANSEF Executive Director, Dorie Flynn, joined Artstream Executive Director, Heller An Shapiro, to participate in an Artstream class at the Forbush School at Oakmont. In addition to inclusive performing arts classes and workshops, Artstream has 6 Inclusive Theater Companies in the metro region.

National Assistive Technology Awareness Day

Congress recently signed a  resolution designating March 27, as "National Assistive Technology Awareness Day". To celebrate, Secretary Beatty and MD TAP Executive Director, Lori Markland toured Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services Loan Closet program.




Ms. Wheelchair America comes to Maryland



Women Embracing Ability Now (W.E.A.N.) recently welcomed Ms. Wheelchair America, Karen Roy, to Maryland where Secretary Beatty presented her a Governor's Citation recognizing her advocacy. Karen's winning platform during the competition, "Stand for Life", focused on improved awareness for medical technology not currently covered by insurance. One of the devices she advocates for are stand-up wheelchairs. They have many physical benefits including improved circulation. 

Maryland Paralympic Gold Medalists Recognized

Ambassador Shinsuke Sugiyama visited Annapolis to sign and renew a Memorandum of Cooperation with Governor Hogan. The agreement reinforces the relationship between Maryland and Japan. Sports and business, with a special focus on the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, were added to this year's commitment. Paralympic gold medalists Becca Meyers and McKenzie Coan will attend the games in 2020.


CONGRATULATIONS SECRETARY BEATTY
Join in us in celebrating Secretary Beatty's recent well-deserved accomplishment.The Daily Record has announced the winners of the 2019 Top 100 Women. Recipients of the award include cabinet members, Secretary Carol A. Beatty and Secretary Kelly M. Schulz.  Secretary Beatty is one of five women who will be inducted into the Circle of Excellence 
this year. She has  received the Top 100 Women award three times, 2013, 2016, and 2019. The Daily Record began Maryland's Top 100 Women in 1996 to recognize outstanding achievements by women demonstrated through professional accomplishments, community leadership and mentoring. Congratulations!

The Children's Mental Health Matters! Celebrating Through Art: The First Lady's Mental Health Awareness Youth Art Display is being held in Annapolis in May 6.  

 

The 3rd Annual 2019 Brave in the Attempt, FORWARD, a TED-talk style event, will be June 4 at Towson University.  The event is sponsored by MDOD, SOMD, DDA, and SEEC.
