Supervisors Proceed with Design Development for the New Hershey Community Center with Careful Consideration of Finances
The schematic design for the new Hershey Community Center was presented and approved at the May 8, 2018 Board of Supervisors meeting, allowing the Township to move forward with the design development phase of the project, while continuing to explore funding opportunities.

Police Remembrance Day is Tuesday, May 15th
Please take a moment next Tuesday to remember police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

President Kennedy, in 1962, proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.

Last year, 135 officers were killed in the line of duty. There have been 51 officer deaths in the first five months of 2018.

Let us remember their sacrifice.

Free Little Library Opens at Bullfrog Valley Park
Have a book that you are ready to part with, or looking for a book? 

Stop by the new Little Free Library at Bullfrog Valley Park. Sponsored by the Friends of Hershey Public Library, the Little Library is located next to the pavilion. You’ll find books for all ages and they do not need to be checked out as they’re simply donated books for public use.

Life on Chocolate Series Special Event
The Downtown Hershey Association is so excited about the 2018 Life on Chocolate event series and so thankful for their volunteers, that they scheduled a special event to celebrate on Tuesday, May 15 in ChocolateTown Square Park at 5:30 p.m.

The 2018 Life on Chocolate event series lineup will be announced!

Meet with friends and neighbors for live music by Hockersville Station, games, and food and drinks for purchase from Tröegs Independent Brewing, Blazing Swine BBQ, and Soul Burrito.

Come at 4:30 p.m. to burn off calories at a free PowerTrain Boot Camp class in the park. Then you can enjoy beer, BBQ, and burritos guilt free!

Community Blood Drive to be Held on Monday, May 21 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank will hold a blood drive at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue. Please bring identification with you.

Donors must have eaten within four hours prior to donating. 

If you are unable to attend the blood drive on this day, you may donate at a place and time more convenient to you. When you give the library’s account # 1072, we will receive credit for your donation.
May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month
"What You Need to Know About Lyme Disease"
Doug Fearn, President of the Lyme Disease Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania (LDASEPA), will present general information about Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections, on Thursday, May 24, at 6:00 p.m. at the library, 701 Cocoa Avenue. He will include some of the latest news on Lyme disease and provide ample time for questions.

Chess Club is Held on Saturdays
Drop in for a fun afternoon of chess on Saturday, May 12 and Saturday, May 19 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

Children ages 12+ may be in the library alone, but younger children will need an adult in the building. No registration is required. Never played chess before? No problem. Beginners are welcome.
In the Middle: Book Club Takes a Look at Books with a Military Theme
In the Middle: Book Club will be held on Wednesday, May 16 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Tweens and teens in grade 6 and up may register to participate in honoring the armed services. Bring a book you’ve read, fiction/non-fiction, with a military theme.
Take the Artemis Helm
Artemis After Hours is for teens 16 and older who can assume the roles of Captain, Helm, Science, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control.

Together you operate your ship and defend the sector from evil aliens. Sign in to the starship “deck” at 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 18 at the library, 701 Cocoa Avenue.
Party Like a Writer
In the Middle: Wild Card will have a publishing party on Wednesday, May 23 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. to celebrate the anthology of stories written by attendees!
Library and Recycling Center Hours of Operation
The library will be closed on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13.
Community News and Events
Girl Scout Troop Leader Openings
Are you honest and fair? Friendly and helpful? Do you use your resources wisely? If so, then becoming a Girl Scout troop leader in the Derry Township area may be a good fit for you!

Our service unit is in need of parents who are interested in becoming a positive influence in young girls’ lives and leading them to learn how to build confidence, courage and character, and to make the world a better place. We have positions available with an existing troop, as well as new troops that can be formed.

If you are interested, please join us for a meet and greet on June 20, 6:30 p.m., at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 212 Cocoa Avenue, Hershey. At this event, you will learn about what it takes to become a leader, the necessary tools that you would need, and resources that will be available to you. Current leaders and a membership coordinator from council will be in attendance to answer any questions that you may have.

Joy of Sports Foundation Holds First Annual Volunteer Recognition Awards Dinner
The event will begin with a cocktail reception with dinner prepared by Woo de La Kitchen and served at 6:15 p.m. at Purcell Hall. The keynote speaker is Dr. John J. O'Malley, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Scranton.

Professor O’Malley combines his academic preparation in philosophy and experimental psychology, a lifetime commitment to coaching, over 25 years of teaching exercise, sport psychology and coaching principles, as well as extraordinary engagement in Northeast PA's premier interscholastic and youth coach training effort, to bring an unparalleled perspective to the vital role of volunteer youth coaches. 

The first award recipients will be presented to Derry Township School District's Athletic Director Scott Govern, and Derry Township's Director of Parks and Recreation Matt Mandia.

Tickets are $25.00 per person, or $225 for a table of ten.
