Yes! As of May 14th, the Region 3 office will be fully staffed! Kristin started this week, and Dave is coming back (working 1/2 days to start) on Monday. I am relieved! Many thanks to retired Bayland Educators Director Rick Engel who filled in for the last 5 weeks - we couldn't have survived "non-renewal season" without him!
Fully-staffed has a new meaning in 2018 - 2 Directors down from 2017.
We will be working with the Region 3 Board of Directors to work on an evolution of how we do business in our office. We'll be asking for your input along the way. Stay tuned!

WELCOME Kristin Lytie to Region 3 as our new Director!
Kristin Lytie grew up in Green Bay and is thrilled to be home. After graduating from UW-GB with a degree in Social Change and Development with an emphasis in Labor Studies she began her career in organized labor working with low wage and immigrant communities in Chicago. More recently she has spent the past three years working as a staff representative for the Graduate Employees Organization at the University of Illinois-Chicago. There she was able to learn more about the inner workings of unions including grievance and bargaining. She also continues to be a board member of a workers' center, Latino Union, which she has been involved with for the past ten years. Latino Union was crucial in passing the Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights which legally acknowledges that domestic workers are in fact workers therefore granting them legal protections. In her spare time Kristin performs standup comedy and has toured all over the country and Canada. Humor has always been a strong component in her organizing work. In April Kristin attended Labor Notes, an amazing conference dedicated to building worker power and was delighted to meet up with Kathy Rohde and discuss the workshops and speakers they had seen, especially the panel discussion with the striking teachers of West Virginia. Then and there Kristin knew she was going to love working for WEAC Region 3.

Nathan LeRoy receives state award to study education
Scholarship from Wisconsin educators paves way for future teachers
Nathan LeRoy is one of four Wisconsin seniors selected as a recipient of the Wisconsin Education Association Council's Future Teacher Scholarship. LeRoy was selected based on his commitment and enthusiasm for continuing Wisconsin's tradition of providing the highest quality teachers for students.
A senior at Sturgeon Bay High School, he is the son of Michael and Lori LeRoy of Sturgeon Bay. His father is a Sturgeon Bay High School teacher and his mother is a teacher in Gibraltar Area Schools and a member of the Gibraltar Education Association.
"I want to inspire children, stand in their corner, and say I am here for you," he said. "I want to encourage them to take risks and make their eyes light up about learning."
LeRoy received the scholarship April 28 at WEAC's annual meeting in La Crosse, with about 500 educators from around the state present to applaud his accomplishment.
"WEAC leads the profession in ensuring every student has a caring, qualified and committed teacher," said Alexandra Agar, a Watertown middle school teacher and chairwoman of WEAC's Community Outreach and Parental Involvement Committee. "Education isn't just a job, it's a calling. This scholarship assists outstanding future educators in fulfilling their dreams to inspire students' natural curiosity, imagination and desire to learn."
WEAC is Wisconsin's largest association of professional educators committed to the success of every student. Members include teachers, education support professionals and technical college instructors.

At the annual WEAC Representative Assembly WEAC President Ron "Duff"
showed a video of recent awards he presented in the field to special WEAC members. One of those was Region 3 member Tara Leithold from New Holstein EA. CONGRATULATIONS TARA! To see the video, go to weac.org/RA.
The recent recertification vote held by the NWTC Educational Support Specialists failed by 2 votes. However, the unit experienced voting difficulties in the first 24 hours of the voting period April 5-6. All of the SSN# were incorrectly entered into the AAA database, but were corrected on the second day of voting. However, some people who reported having difficulty subsequently did not log in to vote.
The union challenged the outcome and a new voting period has been approved. The new election will begin at noon on Friday May 18 and end at noon on Thursday June 7.
Two WEAC members named UW-Oshkosh Adjuncts of the Year
Fond du Lac High School social studies teacher Jason Walter - a member of WEAC Region 5 -
and, pictured at left, Neenah High School teacher Bruce Moriarty - a member of WEAC Region 3 - have been named 2018 Adjuncts of the Year by the Cooperative Academic Partnership Program (CAPP) at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

Here at Region 3, we get lots of questions from teachers about the recent licensure changes. When and how can I report successful semesters of teaching? How much does a background check cost? How do I apply for the background check? The wheels seem to be turning slowly as the DPI has not yet finalized processes and procedures for these things.
