Dear families,
Thirteen years ago a group of 280 five year-olds began a journey that will end on June 10th in the gymnasium at Oregon High School. Each student has their own story about the events that led them to the stage at graduation. They have grown up before our eyes and are almost ready for a world beyond the Oregon School District. As the class of 2019 finishes their final obligations and prepares for their graduation ceremony, we recognize the teachers, counselors, coaches, support staff and others who have helped along the way.
This is staff appreciation week and we are fortunate to have such a talented and committed team of educators in the Oregon School District. OHS will be saying good-bye to some very important members of our team as they retire at the end of the school year. Teachers Cindy Eddy, Cindy Ellestad and Kay Bliefernicht will all retire. They amassed 100 years of combined service. Missy Sampson and Shelly Hicks will be retiring from our health office. Our Administrative Team will also lose a key partner as Dan Rikli will be completing his 30 year career as an educator. They have all left their mark on our school-community. They will be missed.
There will be new faces on the OHS team next fall. We will be excited to share their stories in the months to come. For the time being, it is all-in for the fast finish. As always, please reach out if you need anything.
Sincerely,
Jim

The
Biotechnology 2 cl
ass recently completed a unit on DNA Sequencing and Bioinformatics. DNA Sequencing allows us to know the order of DNA bases which code for an organism. Bioinformatics uses computers to analyze those sequences. It can be used to determine what type of organism produced the DNA sequence and the similarity between DNA sequences in a diagram called a "phylogenetic tree". For example, we learned that DNA sequencing and Bioinformatics has been used to show that some fish markets are mislabeling their products as a more expensive species of fish (are you really eating a grouper sandwich?). It has also been used to determine which type of modern bears are most closely related to prehistoric cave bears (answer . . . polar bears). Read more...

Academic and Career Planning Collaboration with RCI
|
The sophomore Health Class students - as part of their Career Wellness Unit - organized a fun and educational event for about 150 of our 6th graders. The students created an interactive game for each of the 16 Career Clusters. The younger students came to the high school for an afternoon in early April and had fun playing the games while learning about the clusters and various careers within each cluster. The first annual "Career Cluster Destination" event was a huge success! Next year we hope to hold the event for all 6th grade students so that they can continue to make connections with their learning to the many possibilities in their future.

As we head into spring, staff will be enforcing the school dress code outlined in the student handbook. Students are expected to dress appropriately for all school activities. The limits that are imposed relate to health, safety, cleanliness, distraction, and/or a level of indecency while still allowing for personal expression and style. We feel the presence of the dress code assists to establish and maintain a positive, learning environment that allows for everyone to feel comfortable. Students who do not come to school dressed appropriately will be asked to change clothes or, if that is not possible, will be sent home to get different clothes.
