August 2017 Newsletter

Welcome to Fall Y'all!

From the Director

Welcome back to soccer, welcome back to school, welcome to or back to the club. We want to thank everyone who has agreed to be a part of the Burlington Soccer Club for the 2017-2018 soccer year. For many of you it is a return to the norm, or is it? For some of you it is a new endeavor and we are eager to get going helping the players love this great game.

The only constant in life is change. Change creates opportunity.

When presented with change there are choices, and one of those is to embrace change and be a part of making it positive. For any one person can complain, point fingers, or simply be apathetic. But the people who know how to make change work in the favor of those around them, make opportunities blossom in to something better.

I feel privileged to be welcomed in to this wonderful community based club. I have only met good people to this point, and I am eager to help move this club in to the next phase of it's well being. My main focus coming in to this endeavor has been to support the staff in their efforts to organize, implement and execute tryouts. Since there were already a number of good people involved my job initially has been to observe, support and offer simple guidance and perspective when and where needed. My second focus has been to observe and evaluate the current state of the club.

Then July hit and we all know what July is for most of us, a chance to take a vacation. That is no different for the leadership group here at BSC. Many of these good people needed a break as this has been a challenging transition. We are reinvigorated and ready to take on the challenges this next year presents. I for one am excited to watch the teams play, help the coaches, and guide our leadership team forward.

Always remember, this is a game for children, played by children. We as adults should watch it with childlike enthusiasm for the children playing it. When any one adult can't keep this in perspective that one person can ruin a child's joy for the game. It is not to be taken seriously and handed down to the children as a serious matter. Serious matters are happening all around the world. But on a soccer field soon will be children doing something they enjoy, enjoy it with them, for soon it will be over and you don't want to miss the opportunity to watch your child enjoy something that makes them smile.

Sincerely,
Jeff Gross

FROM THE DESK OF SUSANNE CONLON – BSC CLUB MANAGER

I hope our August newsletter finds you ready to begin a fun Fall season of soccer!
It has been a busy couple of months but we are moving along and working hard to make your soccer club experience a good one.  It has been a pleasure meeting and/or speaking with many of you and I’m pleased that several of you have taken the opportunity to stop by the office to take care of your soccer business and have been happy to serve some of you at my home doing the same. It is important that you find us responsive and available.
So what else have we been doing? Well …
Teams have been formed. Coaches have been appointed. Team Managers have identified themselves and been hard at work getting you organized. Uniforms (should) have been ordered! Players have been rostered and registered with NC Youth Soccer. Practices are underway. Our game schedules are in the bag and soon to be released by NC Youth Soccer. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Next up: BSC Shootout over Columbus Day weekend (10/07 – 10/08) … be sure to invite your friends who play at other clubs around the state.

If you have any questions or problems please email me at [email protected] or stop by the office during published hours.

FROM THE DESK OF J.P.STRACHAN-ACADEMY DIRECTOR

Well, the Fall season is upon us already. The first two weeks of practice are already under our belts. The coaches and the players have hit the ground running and it has been great to see the enthusiasm from everybody involved. For those who are returning to the club for their 2nd or 3rd year I hope that you are enjoying the changes we are implementing this season. We (coaches) have been assessing our programming, group assignments and the flow throughout our time together at the practice fields. Based on feedback I gather each week we will continue to do our best to maximize the experience for our players. We will also rotate the coaches so the players will get to meet all of the players as the season progresses.

All of our academy through U12 teams have very busy Fall schedules and the majority of our teams in this age group will start August 26th in High Point for the Furniture City Classic tournament. For some players this will be their first ever soccer match with BSC. This can be a daunting experience for our younger players and their parents. With that in mind we hosted a very informal get together for the academy and U11 players this past weekend (19th Aug) at the Fairchild soccer fields. Here we introduced some of the basics to our teams. With our U11 boy’s teams, we were introducing them to 9v9, off-sides and even the new kick off that is used by FIFA. For our younger academy players we introduced some of the rules that we use in academy soccer: 7v7, retreating to the half way line for goal kicks (allows players to play out from the back), and proper throw in technique, to name just a few. All of these subtle changes in academy soccer are designed with player development in mind.

For the month of September BSC will participate in US Youth Soccer, Youth Soccer Month. The concept is very similar to what we did for our skills sessions this summer. Each week during Youth Soccer Month we will focus on a different message celebrating Youth Soccer; Fun, Family, Friendship and Fitness.

The goals of Youth Soccer month are to raise awareness of Youth Soccer and the benefits of playing the game; the #1 youth participation sport in the USA and a leading contributor to the healthy lifestyle of our families. It brings kids of all ages and abilities together for fun, friendship and fitness.

During the four weeks in September we will focus and measure the technical proficiency, skill development and growth of our players in 4 areas. We will run this during September and again at the start of the spring seasons and again at the end of the season. The goal for data collection serves 3 primary roles.

  1. Provides self-assessment and reflection for the player as it relates to their output/performance on the corresponding tests
  2. Supports our directors of coaching in their development of reality based training sessions to meet the demands of the game, while furthering the individual skill development of our players
  3. Stimulates and challenges the players to work towards a tangible goal related to their individual skill level
The technical proficiencies to be administered will be; Individual Juggling, Change of Direction Dribbling, Close Control – Figure 8 Dribbling and Passing and ball Striking Accuracy.

The goals of the technical testing are
  1. Measure fundamental technical skills
  2. Use the results as feedback to players on skills to improve
  3. Encourage our players to spend time on their own mastering the ball
  4. Test the players throughout the season to provide feedback and personal reward for measurable improvement.

It should be noted that these tests that NC Youth Academy and BSC are using are modified from the U.S. Women’s Youth National Team Program (designed with U12-U20 players in mind).
