Next Breakfast: June 28
Featured Speaker: Laura Little

"Come From Away"- the Tony Award winning play, is co-produced by Coeur d'Alene's own Laura Little. T he musical depicts how the folks of Gander, Newfoundland - a town about the size of Cheney - opened their homes and their hearts to 6,579 passengers on transatlantic flights stranded there for five days when U.S. airspace was closed after the terrorist attacks. "It doesn't talk about the tragedy of 9/11. It just talks about the good side of human nature that comes out in a time of tragedy," she said. "People were in a place where they didn't know anybody, and the best part of them came out instead of the worst part."

May's Networking Breakfast featured Nick Smoot, Community Manager of the Innovation Collective, who provided our group with insights and information about his vision of bringing Coeur d'Alene into the age of technology, strengthening community relationships and businesses.

Join us monthly to hear unique and informational speakers, meet new members and hear the latest happenings.

"It was in the cards..."

At the request of the City of Hayden, the Hayden Historic Preservation Commission is producing a history about our local pioneers, early residents, and settlers. It takes in Hayden Lake, Hayden, Rimrock, and part of the Rathdrum Prairie. Over one hundred people were interviewed to make this nearly finished first volume possible. Searching out the second and third generations to interview was done with the help of Ancestry.com and detective work. A second volume has been started with over twenty-five interviews completed. To spark interest in this history project, the commission is providing brief summaries of a few of our early settlers.

Naturally, Mathew A. Hayden is the first person to be considered since he was one of the first settlers and named Hayden Lake after himself. When Mathew first arrived here on September 1, 1878, he bought 209 acres for $545.53. That same year, John Hager, John Hickey, and James Monaghan arrived and purchased land for their farms. James Monaghan started the first general store in the area.

The lake was originally called Lake DeNuff, having been so named by Father DeSmet in 1846. Both Mathew and his friend John Hager loved to play cards and one evening in 1879, they decided the lake needed a new name and thought playing a game of cards with the winner naming the lake would be the way to go. There are two different stories about the card game they played: "Seven-Up" or "Five Card Stud."  In the end, Mathew beat John's  two pairs  with three of a kind. Being the winner, he named the body of water Hayden Lake.
