Public Hearing on Proposed Changes to the Zoning Ordinance
A public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., at the Derry Township Municipal Complex, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey. The purpose of the hearing is to receive public comment regarding proposed Ordinance No. 705, which would amend Chapter 225 (Zoning) of the Code of the Township.

The ordinance makes general revisions, corrections, and clarifications relative to regulations described in Article II (Form and Function); Article III (Zoning Districts and Overlays); Article IV (Performance Standards and Supplementary Regulations); Article V (Conditional Uses and Special Exceptions); and Article XI (Definitions).

Public Hearing on a Petition to Vacate South First Street and F Street
A public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 6:15 p.m., in the meeting room of the Derry Township Municipal Complex, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey. The purpose of the hearing is to receive public comment regarding a petition to vacate South First Street and F Street, as filed by The Hershey Company. South First Street is a 15-foot-wide right-of-way located along the rear of the properties addressed as 103, 107, 111, 113, 115, and 117 East Caracas Avenue. F Street is a 15-foot-wide right-of-way located along the east side of 117 East Caracas Avenue.

The petition and supporting information may be viewed at the Derry Township Department of Community Development, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Plant Causes Serious Health Treat
Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is a federally listed noxious weed. Its sap, in combination with moisture and sunlight, can cause severe skin and eye irritation, painful blistering, permanent scarring and blindness.

Giant hogweed is a biennial or perennial herb in the carrot family (Apiaceae) and can grow to 14 feet or more. Its hollow, ridged stems grow 2-4 inches in diameter and have dark reddish-purple blotches. Its large compound leaves can grow up to 5 feet wide. Its white flower heads can grow up to 2 1/2 feet in diameter. Giant hogweed grows along streams and rivers and in fields, forests, yards and roadsides. It prefers open sites with abundant light and moist soil, but it can grow in partially shaded habitats.

If you come into contact with giant hogweed, immediately wash the affected area with soap and water and keep the area away from sunlight for 48 hours. See your physician if you think you have been burned by giant hogweed.

Experience Hershey's First Culturefest
The Downtown Hershey Association invites you to Culturefest on Saturday, June 23 from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m., at ChocolateTown Square Park and the surrounding streets. Celebrate diversity and enjoy ethnic foods, music, and dance from a variety of cultures.

Shank Park Drive-In Movie
The Sandlot is the featured movie Friday, June 22 (June 23 rain date).

Admission is free! The movie begins at dusk. Bring lawn chairs and blankets, or watch from your car. A concession stand will be open during the movie.

Shank Park is located at 850 Bullfrog Valley Road, Hummelstown.
Act a Story, Sing a Song with Robin Bady

When Robin tells stories, you become the characters in your favorite stories and songs. No registration is required. The program is suitable for children in grades K-5.

The Market runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Chocolatetown Square, Hershey.

Market on Chocolate will not be held on Saturday, June 23 because Culturefest will take place in Chocolatetown Square, but many of the Market vendors will be at Culturefest.

Bravura Brass Rocks!

The Bravura Brass is a summer tradition at the Hershey Public Library. Enjoy an afternoon of great brass music spanning centuries and genres. Featuring the trumpet, French horn, trombone and the tuba, this inspiring performance will have families enthralled with their musical virtuosity. 

No registration is required. The program is suitable for children in grades K-5.

Movie and a Craft: The Country Bears
Come to the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue, on Friday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. to make a craft and watch a movie. The Country Bears is about a cub who tries to round up a disbanded all-bear music group to save a hall from being demolished. No registration is required.
Friends of the Hershey Public Library Summer Film Festival - Animal Favorites
Head over to the nice, cool library on Sunday, July 8 at 2:00 p.m. to view the movie Beethoven I(PG). Snacks will be provided. No registration is required. The library is located at 701 Cocoa Avenue.
Library and Recycling Center Hours of Operation
The library and township offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4 for Independence Day.
Community News and Events
2018 Salute to America
The Hershey Symphony Orchestra invites the community to celebrate Independence Day one day early on Tuesday, July 3 at the 15th annual free concert on the lawn of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. 

The orchestra’s performance, entitled “An American Salute” begins at 7:30 p.m. In the event of rain, the concert will be held on the following evening.
Complimentary water and ice cream will be provided by the Medical Center. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

The first half of the concert will feature popular movie themes from Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. The second half of the concert, the Orchestra will present “An American Salute,” accompanied by Hershey Symphony Orchestra vocalists, as they celebrate America and provide a special tribute to the military.

The concert is under the direction of Bob Sproul and is sponsored by Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, The Hershey Lodge, Sutliff Chevrolet, Fillson Water, Swiss Premium, Hershey Ice Cream, and Hershey Symphony Orchestra. Parking is free and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. A freewill offering will be taken to benefit the Orchestra.
June's Horticulture Society's Meeting to Focus on Succulents
The Hershey Horticulture Society will meet on Monday, July 9, at 11:00 a.m. at the Brownstone Lodge, Hockersville Road, Hershey. Donna Wierzbowski of Stauffers of Kissel Hill will discuss the care of inside and outside succulents, best varieties for different areas, and their propagation. 

The program begins at 1:00 p.m., is free, and the public is invited. Please call 717-545-7538 for further information.
Learn to Skate with Hershey Figure Skating Club
Established in 1934, with Milton S. Hershey as its first member, the Hershey Figure Skating Club offers Learn to
Skate classes and programs for beginner skaters to competitive levels. Classes begin July 12, 2018. The learn to skate programs teach the fundamentals of ice skating and provide the best foundation for figure skating, ice hockey, and speed skating. With six progressive levels, skaters will be able to advance with confidence to more
specialized areas of skating. 

Ice hockey instruction is also offered. Taught without a puck, skaters learn the proper skating techniques for the game and how to be more proficient and agile on the ice.

Adult Only Learn to Skate classes are provided for skaters over 18 years of age and are tailored to fit you. Classes will be held Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m.

Family Learn to Skate classes are for skaters of all ages and all abilities and are held Thursday evenings at 5:45 p.m.

The six-week sessions are $79. A current USFS membership of $16, valid through June 2019, must be held. Discounts are available for subsequent family members.

Skate rental is $2.50 per class. Gloves and helmets are recommended. Parking is free. All classes are at the Hersheypark Arena.
