Groundbreaking at Shor Park

Mrs. Shor with Park District
 Director Chris Clingman
On Thursday, May 31, the Clermont County Park District celebrated a groundbreaking at Shor Park in Union Township for its new pavilion, playground and restrooms. Sylvia Shor, who donated the pristine 56 acres to Clermont County Park District 15 years ago, was there with her granddaughter.

Commissioners Ed Humphrey and David Painter attended.

The land was originally used by the Shor and Baker families to raise race horses for River Downs. After the deaths of her husband, and Mr. and Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Shor made the decision to donate this land.

Now, it is a beautiful piece of nature smack dab in the middle of suburban Union Township. Its wetlands have been restored. It has several trails, but no 'amenities,' which the addition of this playground and pavilion will change.

The cost of the project is $1.2 million. This is only possible because voters in November 2015 passed a levy --  the first ever -- in support of the Park District. As Park Board Chairman Bill Stearns said, "The taxpayers gave us a huge gift in passing the levy."

$5 fee increase approved
Commissioners on May 23 approved a $5 increase to the annual motor vehicle registration fee for Clermont County residents. It will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2019, and will fund the county's Road Improvement Program.

County Engineer Patrick Manger initially requested the increase when he came before Commissioners on March 12. At that time, he presented information about the need for the additional revenue -- approximately $1 million -- the fee would raise in the county.

Overdose deaths decline
76 deaths in 2017 caused by accidental drug overdoses

Clermont County had some promising news in May. Deaths due to drug overdoses declined for the second straight year in the county, according to the Clermont County Coroner's Office.

In 2017, the Coroner's Office, under the direction of Dr. Brian Treon, ruled that 76 deaths were caused by accidental drug overdoses. This compared to 83 in 2016, and 94 in 2015 -- the highest number since Clermont County began to see the effects of increased opioid use in the late 2000s.

Tax abatement OK'd for Bryan Equipment
Clermont County Commissioners approved on May 23 an enterprise zone tax abatement agreement for Bryan Equipment Sales, Inc., of Miami Township. Bryan Equipment plans to construct a 170,000-square-foot building at a new location on State Route 28 in Goshen Township.

In concert with Goshen Township Board of Trustees, Commissioners OK'd a 60 percent property tax abatement for 10 years, saving Bryan Equipment Sales approximately $1.5 million. Rick Bryan, Chief Executive Officer of Bryan Equipment, said, "These savings will be directly reinvested in the project."

New Records Center coming

At their session on May 9, County Commissioners approved a $1.89 million contract for the construction of a new Records Center facility to Perkins/Carmack Construction LLC of Milford. The groundbreaking, above, was held on May 21.

The 20,000-square-foot metal building is expected to be completed by February 2019, according to Facilities Manager Wade Grabowski. It will be built off Clermont Center Drive on property next to the Clermont County Family Support Center.
