Tip of the Week

Accommodations for Survivors

Tip of the Week authored by Rick Olshak, Advisory Board, ATIXA

A student, a victim of sexual assault, has requested to leave campus for the rest of the semester and to be allowed to finish courses remotely.  Due to long distance, the student will no be able to return to campus for any final exams. In addition, the student is currently enrolled in multiple courses that require highly extensive group work. The student has requested to remain enrolled, will not take a leave of absence and is not planning to pursue any incompletes for current courses. Is allowing this student to finish the courses from home a reasonable accommodation?

Looking to Keep Your Certification Up-to-Date? Great New Training Options Available from ATIXA!

In keeping with the pace of change to Title IX and VAWA Section 304, you?ll find that ATIXA has completely revamped our training offerings for 2015. We have added a strategic prevention track in San Diego, and expanded our advanced coordinator training options in San Diego and at other regional events. Our events now offer policy training, advanced investigator skills training at several levels, and expanded advanced coordinator track opportunities. To mark the occasion of this major expansion and updates of our trainings, we have created a new dashboard, which you can find here. This new dashboard allows for ease of use by identifying trainings by type, location and date.

Join us in Philadelphia in October! The 2015 ATIXA/SCOPE conference in Philadelphia in October will also offer significant pre- and post-conference certification opportunities. Pre-conference opportunities include one-day events for Strategic Prevention, Title IX & Hazing and the ATIXA One Policy, One Process. We will also offer some great Advanced training options as two-day post-conference events.

As ever, we continue to refresh the content within each of our trainings, as well, to assure that it keeps you up-to-speed on the ever-changing nature of sex and gender discrimination within school and campus environments. Your ATIXA Title IX team remains dedicated to keeping ATIXA events and membership at the top of your 2015 budgeting priorities. We hear frequently that you could never do it without us, but we can?t do it without you.

The journal will be launched for the ATIXA/SCOPE 2015 Joint National Conference with the call for submissions having been made during the ATIXA/SCOPE 2014 Joint National Conference. Article submissions are encouraged in a variety of content areas. These include:

  • Original research in the areas of campus sexual assault, investigation, coordination, administration. Preference will be give to studies that have generalizable results and are based on findings from multiple college and universities rather than a single school.

  • Discussion of policy and administration challenges and best practices.

Model Clery Act ASR Language Now Available from ATIXA

Assisting in Compliance with VAWA Section 304

By now, many of you have taken a look at the VAWA Reauthorization section known as the Campus SaVE Act. This amendment changes the Clery Act in ways much more substantive than previous amendments. While amendments before asked us to disclose existing policies, they largely did not require us to create new policies except for the set of amendments contained in the 1992 Campus Sexual Assault Victim's Bill of Rights. Now, those disclosures and rights have been largely eclipsed by the SaVE amendments, which will require us to develop significant new policy language, much of the content of which is prescribed by the SaVE Act. Final regulations were released in October 2014 by the Negotiated Rulemaking Committee, requiring changes to the Clery Act effective July 2015. Start planning now, because there is a lot to this new law.

We have a shortcut to SaVE you time. We have created template language to satisfy all of the new SaVE Act disclosure requirements - at least as best we can decipher them before final regulations are announced later this year. It's six pages of model language containing policy and procedure information outlined by Title IX and Campus SaVE, and is compliant with the most recent draft regulations of the VAWA Section 304 regulation. This template is available from The NCHERM Group for $249. To purchase our SaVE disclosure template, visit our online store or contact Michelle Issadore at (610) 993-0229, extension 1002. Please note that our template only includes the new ASR required disclosures, not all updates that were made by SaVE, such as those involving hate crimes statistics and hate crime categories. Please also note that purchasers will receive all updates made to the template language, so you can be assured that you will always have our most current version at hand.

The ATIXA MaxStack

ATIXA has collaborated with Maxient, the industry?s leading database for case documentation and tracking, to offer the new ATIXA MaxStack. Check out our website to learn more about bringing this resource to your campus!
