Gospel Reading for Sunday, April 7th, 2019

Fifth Sunday of Lent

Do Not Condemn

  • What do you think Jesus was writing in the sand?
  • Do you think anyone in the crowd was perfect?
  • Do you think anyone there was sinless?

Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday gospel together as a family. The questions above are good conversation starters as you prepare your children for weekly mass.
A Note from the Principal:

Dear SJE Parents,

’The second half of Lent offers our students the opportunity to work on self-control. It is a tremendous challenge to teach this behavior to our students. We are battling a society which values self-centered behavior.  In the midst of this, we struggle to teach our children to think before they speak or act. Perhaps our greatest challenge at school is that students frequently brush off responsibility for unkind words or actions by saying, “I was just joking”. This is an easy excuse, used by many of our students on a daily basis. During April, we will be working to help our students understand that while joking and kidding around with friends is not a bad thing, we need to consider who might be negatively impacted by a joke. Unkind words hurt. Thoughtless pushing, shoving, and horsing around leads to bumps and bruises.

While choosing kind words and helping actions is often not the popular thing, it is the right thing.  You can help us by having daily conversations with your child about their behaviors in school. Ask your child about their day, focusing on their words and actions. Divert attention away from discussions about the behavior of classmates and focus on personal responsibility and self-control.

We are proud of our students. Helping them to grow into the fine young men and women that they are meant to be is a huge responsibility. Your support for our efforts is greatly appreciated.

Growing in God’s Love,

Mary Laidlaw Otto

Please join us!

We will be gathering in church on these Fridays during Lent to pray the Stations of the Cross:

Friday, April 5th, and Friday, April 12th.

Families are invited to join us for this unique prayer experience. Please feel comfortable bringing your little ones as well as grandparents along to this family-friendly prayer. All are welcome!
Looking for a sign of spring? Here are some of the seedlings our students have started. Before you know it, we'll be transplanting them to our garden. We can't wait!
Severe Weather Drill

Next Friday, April 12, in conjunction with our state Severe Weather Week, our students will participate in a tornado/severe weather drill. During this drill, all students will proceed to the church hall, assume the “duck and cover” position, and wait quietly for further instructions from teachers. Our students always do a fantastic job of waiting quietly and listening for instructions. While some of our students experience a bit of anxiety whenever we have any kind of practice activity, we know that these activities keep our students safe.

Please note that the statewide severe weather drill will take place on Thursday. Because we will have a significant number of substitute teachers in the building on Thursday, we have chosen to have our school drill on Friday.

Financial Aid Applications are now available
Families are invited to apply for financial aid grants for the upcoming year. Our website has been updated with applications for our own tuition angel fund, as well as information on the St. Gerard Fund and the Fr. Grom Scholarship. Last year, we dispersed nearly $20,000 from our Angel fund, and our students received an additional $8,800 in financial aid from the St. Gerard Fund.

Tuition Angel Fund grants and Fr. Grom Scholarship forms must be turned in no later than May 1 st .   Completed St. Gerard applications must be turned into the school office no later than Monday, April 8 th .

Our water walk is coming!

During Lent our students and teachers have been learning about something we take for granted – easy access to clean water for drinking, bathing and cooking. On Thursday, April 18th, our students will have the opportunity to understand what it feels like to live in an area which lacks the resources necessary for clean water. We will participate in a water walk. Students in grades 5 through 8 will travel one and a half miles from our SJE parking lot, on Plainfield Avenue to the Root River. With the help of parent and teacher volunteers, students will fill gallon milk jugs with water, bringing this water back to school to fill our rain barrels and provide water for our school garden. Students in grades 3 and 4 will be walking one mile on Plainfield Avenue to 99th Street, where they will meet the older students and help them carry the water back to our rain barrels. Students in grades K4 through 2 will have the opportunity to join in this activity as well, walking one half mile on Plainfield Avenue to meet our older students. With the help of their big buddies, they will also carry water back to school. We are working with the Greenfield Police Department to ensure a safe experience for everyone.

Today’s paper envelope contains a permission slip for the water walk. Please complete the permission slip and return it to school as soon as possible, no later than Monday, April 14th. Parents are invited to join us on our walk. Just complete the “chaperone” area of the permission slip if you are available to help.

As part of our Water to Thrive fundraiser, families are encouraged to support their students as they walk with water.  Please donate to our well project in the name of your student.  It’s easy to donate, honoring the efforts of your student as they learn what it is like to live in underdeveloped areas of the world. Even the smallest donation helps to support our goal of building a well for a village in need.   Here is the link to make a donation: SJE Water to Thrive Well Project

A special thanks to Burghardt Sporting Goods for their donation to our project. Don't forget, your child may wear his or her Water To Thrive T-shirts on Thursdays with their uniform pants/skirt.
