To Our DPM 8th Grade Parents and Guardians:

We wanted to provide dates and information about the upcoming Lake Forest High School transition meetings for our 8th graders.

This year, our 8th graders will have virtual meetings with their LFHS counselor and parents to select courses for their Freshman year. These meetings will occur on February 4th and 5th and are scheduled by the high school. An email was sent by LFHS to families earlier this week with directions on how to complete the pre-registration process. Once you pre-register, you will be sent an additional email with directions for how to schedule your child's 15 minute registration appointment using a program called "Meet the Teacher." Please note: if you have already scheduled a transition meeting for your student with support needs with your child's IEP case manager, you do not need to schedule an additional registration meeting. If you have any questions or concerns, email Gail Moesta ([email protected]).

Our 8th grade teachers will use their homeroom time this upcoming Wednesday as an opportunity to help students prepare for these meetings and begin to think about courses.

While freshmen have many set core classes, students do have the exciting opportunity to pick 1-2 electives their first year. Here are some discussion points you can share with your students to help them start to think about what electives they might be interested in:

  • There are class 8 periods in the LFHS school day (lunch is separate from these 8 periods)
  • Most freshmen have the chance to pick 1-3 electives
  • Electives can be a study hall, Enriched Studies or Learning Strategies class which will give you time in your school day to get homework done and get help if you need it.
  • Electives can also be a Foreign Language
  • Electives can also be unique classes in the following Departments:
  • Business Education
  • Fine and Applied Arts (drawing, photography, New Media, etc.)
  • Music (Band, Orchestra, Choral Music)
  • Theater

Please see the Freshman Course Guide for all elective options - potentially you could print this out for students to look through during HR time.

Sample Schedule:
1. English 1
2. World History and Geography
3. Biology
4. Math
5. Wellness for Life (PE)
6. Spanish 2
7. Art Foundations/Photography (each class a semester)
8. Study Hall
*Lunch will be scheduled in the day somewhere. There are 3 lunch periods and the lunches have all grades in them.

As always, please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Principal
