Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine CH KBE, usually known as Hall Caine, was a British novelist, dramatist, short story writer, poet and critic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. He was secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Caine's popularity during his lifetime was unprecedented.

GALSWORTHY, John (1867-1933)
 
John Galsworthy was an English novelist and playwright. In 1921 he was elected as the first president of the PEN International literary club and was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1929. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932. He is best known for his novels, particularly The Forsyte Saga, 1922 which was also a hugely successful television adaptation in 1967.

WHITE, William Allen (1868-1944)
 
William Allen White was an American newspaper editor, politician, poet, novelist, biographer of presidents, a founding editor of the Book of the Month Club, "the Sage of Emporia"). He won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. In 1947 White posthumously won his second Pulitzer Prize for his book, "The Autobiography of William Allen White".

Edward Everett Hale American author, historian, editor, social reformer, and Unitarian minister. He was a long term member of the American Antiquarian Society. He is best remembered for his short story "The Man Without a Country."

RARE GUERNSEY FIRST EDITION  INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR TO RELATIVE

First edition, second issue. 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., [vii]-xii, 234. with half-title.  Presentation copy signed from editor, FB Tupper, on the half-title page plus a printed note death notice loosely inserted  in front endpapers with handwritten date (possibly Tupper).
3 lithographed plates (incl. frontis.). Original green pebbled cloth, printed paper label (minor wear at top of spine, label discolored). Scattered light foxing, otherwise, very good condition.

A superb association copy in original condition inscribed on the half-title, "Tupper Carey, Esq., with the editor's best regards, Guernsey, 7 April, 1837." Tupper Carey (1788-1867) was the third son of  Isaac Carey and Marguerite Carey (née Tupper) and the husband of Anne Carey (née Le Mesurier). He had a long a distinguished military career serving during the Peninsula wars  and  appointed to Deputy Commissary-General. The Brock, Tupper and Carey Guernsey families are related via various marriages over many years

As first issued, this book contained 218 pp. only. This first edition, second issue copy contains the very scarce supplementary section printed in 1836 (pp. 219-234)

Original 1759 accounts and maps of the French Indian war at Quebec and Crown Point (New York). Included are 2 maps of 1) the Island of Orleans with the Environs of Quebec [issued within a month of the surrender of Quebec] and 2) An Authentic  Plan of the River St. Laurence from Sillery to the Falls of Montmorency. 3) The third map is of the Country between Crown Point and Fort Edward, showing Ticonderoga and Lake George (New York). Pasted to the verso of the front fly-leaf is a fold-in map of Fort Duquesne, dated 1754 by the Major, who was imprisoned there.

Major Robert Stobo was an 18th-century Scottish-born colonial American frontiersman and soldier. Stobo was an officer in the Virginia militia who, during the French and Indian War, acted as a spy while a prisoner-of-war at Fort Duquesne. "Wilfrid Laurier," dated Arthabaskaville, 10th April, 1875, addressed to Donald Alexander MacDonald, Postmaster General, Ottawa. 17 lines on one 8vo sheet, docketed by MacDonald on the verso, vertical fold, near fine.
Laurier writes: " Arthabaskaville,/ 10th April, 1875./ Hon. D. A. Macdonald / Postmaster General, / Ottawa,/ Dear Sir;
/ I had been / given to understand / that there would be / from the first of April, / a Tri-weekly mail / between Arthabaska/ Station & Bulstrode & / Ste. Clotilde. Is it not / yet in operation./ Yours respectfully, / Wilfrid Laurier."

Postmarked: LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY  CANADA  MAY 6 1856  (located at Toronto) Pence issues period stampless cover with contents. Size of cover as is: 8 1/4" x 4 1/4" Laid blue paper.(reduced from a 9-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches original stationery envelope--similar in size to a modern no 10 envelope). 

CONTENTS:  (Original printed document by the Queen's Printer)   'Resolutions to be moved in the Committee of the Whole by the Hon. Mr. Attorney General Macdonald on Wednesday the 7th of May 1856'  (Judiciary system of Canada West legislation)

18 days later on May 24 1856, John A MacDonald became the most powerful politician in Canada for the first time. On that date he assumed the leadership of the conservatives and the position as joint premier of Canada.

HARRISON, Samuel Bealey [1802-1867]

A complete letter, 13 x 8 inches,  folded to  6-1/4 x 3-1/4 inches, dated Nov. 11, 1841 signed SB Harrison.  Secretary's office in Kingston to Daniel Lizars Esq. of Goderich. 
 The 1st Parliament of the Province of Canada was in session from June 15, 1841, to 1843 and Harrison, representing Kingston, Ontario was the joint Premier from Canada East thus this letter written while he held this position.
The letter's content are about the Proclamation constituting the new  Townships and the insertion of Bosanguet is clearly an error that the Township forming part of the Western DIstrict (of Huron). As well comments on the Ashfield and the range of townships to the northward being included in the Proclamation when the act so explicitly  constitutes them a portion of the District. He goes on to say he will talk to the Attorney General to get these issues mentioned corrected.

Samuel Bealey Harrison was a lawyer, miller, reformer politician, and a judge of the County of York. He was Joint Premier of the Province of Canada for Canada East from 1841 to 1842 with William Henry Draper PM for Canada West. Draper was a member of the Family Compact and Harrison was a moderate Reformer, the predecessor of the Liberal Party of Canada. In February 1842 he was named one of three directors of the Welland Canal which had been taken over by the government. He also served in the Senate for the University of Toronto.

Mary Howitt was an English poet, and author of the famous poem The Spider and the Fly and inspired Lewis Carroll. Lewis Carroll made a parody of it in "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" calling it the "Lobster Quadrille."

4-1/2 x 7 inches, was folded to 4-1/2 x 1-3/4 inches to fit in envelope included with this letter. Autograph letter signed. Very good condition. Four pages, Undated.[but 1847]. To fellow author, Anna Maria Hall (1800-1881) an Irish novelist who often published as "Mrs. S. C. Hall". It reads in part: "I am sorry that when you made your arrangements you did not let me know, as I really matched a day...as the saying is to of that which might as well have been left undone. However it is of no use complaining.

AN EARLY AND IMPORTANT DOCUMENT IN THE HISTORY OF SLAVERY

1792. Hartford, Connecticut
10 x 16.75 inches, 4pp, The Connecticut Courant, June 18, 1792, Hartford, newspaper. The main article concerns hearings in London England in the House of Commons regarding slavery and the horrors of the Middle Passage.

William Wilberforce and his battle in the British House of Commons to bring about the change in the law regarding slave trade; Wilberforce again brought the question of abolition before the House and, almost a year after the previous defeat on April 20, 1791), on 2 April 1792, and once more found himself addressing the House of Commons.
The bill passed as amended, by 230 votes to 85, and gradual abolition became law, the final date for slave trading to remain legal being later fixed at 1796  ...  Click for more information and photos;

Autograph album of O.T. Brown of Poughkeepsie, New York. Largely a collection of autographs of friends and acquaintances.
There are about 130 signatures of fellow student of O. T. Brown and many with thoughtful notes and comments. Beautiful examples of calligraphy in virtually all the signatures!

Interspersed with approximately 24 very attractive and skillfully executed calligraphic drawings of birds, feathers, angels and other decorative flourishes.
Also included is an 1875 pamphlet from the Eastman Business College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.  O.T. Brown was a student who attended Eastman National Business College (ENBC) from 1865-1866, originally from Milford, PA.

Journal of the Legislative Council of Upper Canada, second session of the thirteenth provincial Parliament Thursday, 22nd June, 1837.
32cm x 20.5cm, (12 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches), [1]-30, (1) self cover, disbound, uncut, age toned paper and  folded corners. First couple of pages in has top edge chipped with small bend pieces of paper bend. Previous owner's name signed in top right of front cover, Samuel Street, Esquire. Insides are generally clean and otherwise in good condition. 

Provenance: Samuel Street  [Jr.] (1775-1844) was a prominent Niagara area businessman, Justice of the Peace,, militia officer, and office holder.  

This report is part of the dealing with the government concerns of the financing and banking situation in 1837 which lead to more legislative to take corrective action.
