Be Careful with Bills Set to Auto-Pay


With the prevalence of automated bill payments options, many people have set up online accounts for the seamless payment of all the common household bills. 

Paperless options can streamline and simplify those recurring monthly bills. However, it is important for married couples to analyze how these payments and notifications are sent in the event a spouse suddenly passes away.

For example, let's look at a common scenario.  Bill and Mary Sample have been married for 40 years. Everything they own is jointly titled, or so they believe. Bill has set up all the monthly household bills to be automatically paid through his VISA credit card. Mary also has a linked VISA credit card under the same account but with a different number. Bill has also selected the paperless option to reduce wasteful paper usage.



How Much Can Your Doctor Charge You, or Your Attorney, To Get a Copy of Your Medical Records?

There are laws in each state that set forth the amount medical providers can charge a patient, or their legal representative, for a copy of the patient's medical records. For example, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, if a patient requests a copy of their own records, a medical provider has the ability to charge a "reasonable cost-based fee." This typically includes the cost of supplies for, and labor of, copying the requested records, a summation of the records, and postage. See Virginia Code § 32.1-127.1:03(J).

If your attorney requests hard copies of your records, a medical provider may charge 50 cents per page, but only up to 50 pages. For each page over and 25¢ per page for each additional page, plus a $20 search and handling fee and all postage and shipping costs. These costs do not apply to photocopies of x-rays, which cost a "reasonable fee" that may include a search and handling fee of $10 plus the actual cost of reproduction and all postage and shipping costs, or copies from microfilm or other micrographic process, which cost $1 per page.
