The amazing Jack Piedmont came into the rescue world in August 2018 from a good samaritan that saw a Facebook post from an owner that wanted to rehome him because they did not want to treat him for heartworms. This loyal companion that gave ten years of love to one family was certainly deserving to have another chance to be loved unconditionally. A volunteer stepped up to make the trip to Alabama and transported Jack P to our veterinarian for his initial intake appointment. It was confirmed that he was heartworm positive and we were going to get his treatment started right away.
Jack P went into a loving foster home where he was spoiled with short walks, daily grooming sessions, home cooked meals and lots of hugs. It wasn't long before he became a star and found his forever home.
Here is the story from the adopter of Jack P.
My first dog was a 130-pound Great Pyr named Fletch, who I'd raised from a puppy. Last year, he died peacefully in my arms after 10 wonderful years. I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to let another dog into my heart. I'd already known about GPRA through friends and I started to become drawn to the website. At first, I just cried looking at all the gentle Pyr faces that reminded me of the friend I'd lost. I had a particular connection to the older dogs. When I saw "Jack P", something just hit me. I'm sure other folks understand that feeling of knowing your dog when you see him. Before even talking to my husband, I filled out an adoption application. GPRA was so helpful, and gently informed me that Jack P was a senior dog with health issues and such. That didn't deter me at all. I thought, even if we only have him for a few months, I want to make them his best months ever! When we met him (thanks to his great foster mom, Suzanne), he had our hearts immediately. Unlike a lot of Pyrs, he doesn't bark and has zero interest in patrolling the yard. He just wants walks, and love, and belly rubs...and he gets all of it. He's been a joyful part of our family for a year now. Since we don't have a lifetime to share with him, we try to make every day his best one ever. I am beyond grateful to GPRA for connecting us with our sweet boy! Btw, since nobody knew his "real" name, we decided to call him "Walter", which seemed like a fitting name for a lovely older gentleman.
