Israel Book Club Summer Reading Selection
We are excited to announce the Israel Lit Book Club's summer reading selection: "Salt Houses," by Hala Alyan, an award winning Palestinian-American author.

"Salt Houses" is the story of Salma, who on the eve of her daughter's wedding, reads the girl’s future in a cup of coffee dregs. She sees an unsettled life for Alia and her children; she also sees travel and luck. While she chooses to keep her predictions to herself that day, they will all soon come to pass when the family is uprooted in the wake of the Six-Day War of 1967.

The Israel Lit book club will meet to discuss the book on Thurs. 9/27 @ 7:30 PM in a location to be announced.

Registration information (including full schedule and cost) coming soon.

Shmirah Training with H evra Kadisha

Tues. 8/7, 6-7 PM or 10-11 PM

Plaza Memorial Chapel - 630 Amsterdam Avenue

The Romemu Hevra Kadisha is pleased to present monthly Shmirah trainings for the larger Romemu community. In the Jewish tradition we do not leave a body unattended from the moment of death until the funeral. Nili Weissman will offer 1 hour trainings at Plaza Memorial Chapel to give you preparation for navigating the funeral home, cultivating your practice, and introducing you to the process of Shmirah.

All trainings are free - just bring your open heart. It is our vision that anyone who feels called to will be lovingly brought into this sacred practice.

Please email Nili Weissman at nweissman@live.com to RSVP for any of the sessions or to ask questions.

Community Opportunities
Cemetery Visits Program from DOROT
Many elders value the tradition of visiting loved ones’ gravesites before the High Holy Days, but cannot do so without assistance. This program makes it possible for seniors to visit the gravesites of loved ones in cemeteries in the New York Metropolitan area. Volunteer escorts accompany seniors from their home via transportation provided by DOROT, offering emotional support and an arm to lean on. Cemetery Visits takes place in July.

Plaza Jewish Community Chapel generously supports DOROT’s Cemetery Visits program.

For more information, please call DOROT at 212-769-2850.
What Matters: Caring Conversations About the End of Life
A new program at Romemu about advance care planning as a Jewish process
What Matters is an important new program that seeks to help people engage in conversations about advance care planning for future healthcare crises and end-of-life decisions. With the help of trained facilitators from the Romemu community, individuals explore their own values and goals when it comes to making decisions about selecting a health care agent, and about the kind of medical and spiritual care you would want in the event of a medical crisis.

For more information, please email  whatmatters@romemu.org
