Parashat HaShavua Class is taking place this Shabbat at 8:30 am.

In July and August months, we need to make sure that the morning minyan has enough people. Please try to come to the morning minyan (6:30 am) as often as possible.

Our summer speaker this Shabbat is Elan Karoll.

*Please respect our observance of Shabbat and refrain from using your phone at any time anywhere in the building. If there is a reason that you must use your phone, we ask that you please leave the building.
Tisha B'av
Tisha B'av begins as a day of loss, but it ends as a day of hope.

This year, since Tisha B'Avfalls on Shabbat, it is observed beginning immediately after Shabbat. We will have Tisha B'Av services the evening of Saturday, July 21 at 9:00 pm, featuring the chanting of Eicha, the prophet Jeremiah's first-hand account of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Beit HaMikdash. It is customary to read Eichawith the lights dimmed, so please bring a flashlight. If you would like to read a chapter of Eicha, please let me know.

Prior to Tisha B'av services, please join us for Shabbat Mincha at 8:00 pm, followed by Seduah Shelishit and a Pre-Tisha B'av Shiur.

This year, as Tisha B'av comes to end,
I would like to invite you to join me for a very special program,
one that will inspire you, and fill you with hope.
Sunday, July 22, Tisha B'Av - 4:00 pm - Mincha
(Please remember that tallit and tefillin are worn at Mincha on Tisha B'Av)

Following Mincha
An exclusive screening of the new film
When The Smoke Clears: A Story of Brotherhood, Resilience and Hope.
A description of the film appears below.

Please join me for this special program and feel free to bring your friends.
Thanks to the sponsors of this program,
Kim and Alan Frankel , for their generosity.
When the Smoke Clears: A Story of Brotherhood, Resilience and Hope tells the true stories of young Israeli soldiers whose injuries leave them fighting for the strength to live. Making breakthroughs and finding meaning by reaching out to those in need, they discover that what didn't kill them really did make them stronger.

The film shares the accounts of Gil, Ofer, and Elad - young war veterans whose unthinkable battle experiences leave them with life-altering mental and physical scars. Returning to society, their trauma disconnects them from all they once valued, turning their lives upside down.

When all seems lost, a revolutionary idea gives them the hope, courage, tools and community to survive, and to embrace their identities as heroes both on and off the battlefield. Banding together in a family of wounded soldiers, they learn to face their obstacles together and discover that in conquering their pain, they might have more to offer than ever before.

When the Smoke Clears follows this band of brothers during the darkest times of their lives, and proves that massive growth and healing can come through giving to others, transforming them into heroes in their own lives and in the lives of those around them.

Soup Kitchen Volunteer Opportunity

For over 10 years Moriah Congregation has been participating in a program originated by Beth Emet Free Synagogue of Evanston which they began in 2002. The BE Soup Kitchen serves dinners each Wednesday night to about 100 individuals who come from various backgrounds: some are homeless men or women, others may live in local intermediate care facilities, still others are working or on fixed incomes needing the soup kitchen system to help them make ends meet.

The Beth Emet Soup Kitchen is loosely connected to a network of other faith-driven soup kitchens in Evanston, each serving a meal on a different day of the week.

Volunteers not only serve the meals, but they prepare it and help pay for it as well. The soup kitchen also has a fund and pays for a portion of each meal. Volunteers arrive at BE at 4:15 pm on their designated date and stay to 7:00 pm. The dinner meal and bagged lunches (for the next day) are prepared between 4:15 and 6:00 pm and dinner is served from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

Moriah’s next date to serve is Wednesday, July 18. If interested, please contact Michael Heyman at heyman.michael@gm ail.c om .

"The Hearing Loop"
Moriah has a loop system available for individuals using hearing aids, to improve communication access for our members and guests with hearing loss. To access this system, tell your audiologist or hearing instrument specialist that your synagogue is "looped" and ask if there is a t-coil in your hearing aid(s). Then make an appointment to have it activated. If your hearing aids do not have a t-coil, talk with him/her about alternate ways of accessing the loop.
