Havana Celebrates 95 years
|
Great excitement prevailed at the 95th anniversary celebration for Havana, Illinois, Church of the Nazarene from June 8-10, 2018. On the brink of selling the church and preparing to build a new church in a new location members and friends of the church, primarily from central Illinois, gathered to celebrate.
The 95th anniversary weekend began on Friday night with a gospel concert held in a tent that was pitched on the new property. This six acre plot of land, on Route 136, on the east edge of Havana, will increase visibility and enable Havana Nazarene to expand their ministry to the community.
On Saturday night a music and memories service was held in the sanctuary. People who had attended the church across the years returned to tell their stories of spiritual victories, memories and the people who have impacted their lives. After the Saturday night service the stories continued informally with refreshments in the fellowship hall.
The special weekend was graced by the presence of General Superintendent Dr. Eugenio Duarte and District Superintendent Dr. Scott Sherwood in the Sunday services on June 10th. Dr. Duarte delivered the morning message in the sanctuary and after lunch at Grandpa's Restaurant Dr. Sherwood spoke in the closing service in the tent at the new location for the church.
Other special guests included Pastor Joe Thomas and several members and friends from the founding church, Bethel Church of the Nazarene, (Near Beardstown, Illinois.) One friend of Havana Nazarene gave $5,000 and several gave from Bethel Church for a total of more than $9,000 contributed to the building fund during the weekend. "It was such a blessing to have those who came from the founding church to support us in this way," stated Pastor Jim Buchanan.
In the week following the 95th anniversary celebration the Havana Nazarene church building was officially sold to Christian Ducks Learning Pond. Formerly known as Havana Christian Day Care, this Christian organization will also be able to expand their ministry to the community. "Sometimes dreams do come true," stated Pastor Buchanan. "In an amazing way the dream of Havana Nazarene collided with the dream of Christian Duck Learning Pond and both institutions are in transition as they each prepare to expand their respective
ministries to the Havana community."
A Brief History of Havana, Illinois Church of the Nazarene
Bethel Church of the Nazarene, near Beardstown, Illinois, was organized in 1913 with Charles and Sophia Hendricker among the charter members. Ten years later the Hendrickers had a vision to start a church in Havana where two of their married daughters now lived. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Centers were also living in Havana and wanted to see a Nazarene church in their town.
There was no money and no building to get started. Four people prayed all night long for a way to start a church in Havana. God answered prayer. Money was donated to buy a tent and a revival was held for four weeks on Water Street near the river. At the end of the revival Havana Church of the Nazarene was organized on June 10th, 1923, and a homely building down the street - called the tabernacle - was dedicated as a temporary church building. Among the sixteen charter members were the two Hendricker daughters Julia Roat and Hattie Larson and Mr. and Mrs. Centers.
In November, 1937, a church building called Pennsylvania Lane Reformed Church, near Mason City, was sold at auction and purchased with all the furniture and fixtures for $550 by Havana Church of the Nazarene. The church was taken apart and eventually moved to an empty lot in Havana on South Broadway that had been purchased for $1,000. The church was finally reassembled and ready for services in March 1940. The "temporary" tabernacle church had been used for nearly 17 years.
Ninety five years later we celebrated with Dr. Eugenio R. Duarte, Dr. Scott Sherwood and the congregation for all that God has done for us and with the sale of our present facility to a local Christian Day Care. We now celebrate that the plans are moving forward with our contractor for construction of our new facility on Route 136.

"Nazarene Youth Conference (NYC) is a vibrant, life-changing youth event held every four years in different locations across the United States and Canada. High School students from all around North America belonging to the Church of the Nazarene gather together in a time of worship, teaching, and community outreach, united by a common belief in Jesus Christ."
"Love God. Love Others. Simple, but challenging. Sometimes described as two pillars of following Jesus, we will explore the connective nature of our relationship with God and others while learning what it means to live out His love in our world."

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20
As you are going,
THINK BIG:
Every relationship, every interaction, all inclusive.
And make disciples,
START SMALL:
You. Be one. Be a Christ-like disciple. Re-present Jesus.
Baptizing them, immersing them in Jesus,
GO DEEP:
Pray. Empty yourself. Sacrifice.

For generations, Nazarenes have supported the World Evangelism Fund. Working together, we accomplish so much as the Body of Christ. Become a part of missions work and partner with the Church of the Nazarene to make Christlike disciples in the nations. In the Funding the Mission plan, the World Evangelism Fund is the vehicle through which we deliver the message of hope - and your church drives that mission.
June 2018 Report

Sixteen people from across NWIL went to the Compassion 101 Training. Pastor Irene taught a 4-session laboratory to explore a variety of issues that concern the church reaching broken and hurting people right where they are. They walked away with an overview of poverty, trauma, and list of "isms" that can overwhelm us. They studied proactive Biblical strategies for understanding how God has uniquely equipped us to share our story to help others connect to the story of God.
Be looking for future Compassion 101 Trainings. You don't want to miss this incredible opportunity.

Rev. Jim Buchanan of Havana preaches at Mozambique Church celebration

Mozambique Church Raises More Than $1,000 on Building Fund Sunday
Matundu Cambinde Church of the Nazarene, located in the Metro Tete area of Mozambique, collected Mt 69,545 (Approximately $1,200) in their Church Construction Fund Raising
Sunday on July 1, 2018. One hundred eighty people crammed into the old church plus forty six children gathered outside for the celebration service.
Invitation letters had been sent to area Nazarene churches and other denominations for the gala celebration and several visitors showed up to worship and give to the church that is being enlarged. Many were not able to come for the service but sent money or deposited money into the church's bank account.
Pastor Jonas Musaleca Betchane joyfully welcomed all who came for the special event. During the service former missionary, Pastor Jim Buchanan (of Havana, Illinois), preached from Malachi 3:8-10 a sermon entitled "The Great Blessing." Buchanan challenged the people to enjoy the promised blessing of God by faithfully giving tithes and offerings. At the close of the message a march offering lasting more than a half an hour was done collecting money according to the groups of church committee, mothers, fathers and youth. In addition, the various churches represented were singled out to give their offering separately as well.
With joyful singing, dancing, marching and smiling the people gave from their hearts. "To have an offering of this amount in Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in Africa and the world, was an incredible testimony to the faithfulness of God to do great things" stated Buchanan.
In addition to the money given Area 3 Coordinator, Pastor Albino Banda, on assignment in Nampula, pledged by phone to contribute ten bags of cement. The renovation project will more than double the size of the church.
Following the offering more speeches and singing were given while awaiting the tabulation of the monies collected. The church committee lead the way by giving more than 60% of the money collected. At the end of the service the children came to quote Scripture and share what they had been learning outside (under a tree). Following the service a meal was served to all in attendance.
