IFNA President Issues a Statement Condemning the Separation of Migrant Families at the U.S./Mexico Border

On June 20, 2018, Dr. Jane Lassetter (USA), IFNA President, issued a statement condemning the separation of migrant families at the U.S./Mexico border and called for the reuniting of families who have been separated. Many nursing and family health organizations have also issued statements of concern which have been archived in the IFNA Caring for Refugee Families toolkit developed in early 2016 by the IFNA Practice Committee. Julie B. Mogbo (Nigeria) is the Director of Family Health at Lead Nurse Africa International Foundation. She is a Trainer of Family Bond Systems, an intervention program featuring nursing and nursing related tools and skills to bring about enhanced and sustainable wellbeing for families. [Read more]

FAMILY NURSING EDUCATION NEWS 
The IFNA Education Committee has developed a new IFNA Position Statement on Graduate Family Nursing Education . This IFNA Position Statement is a companion to the IFNA Position Statement on Pre-Licensure Family Nursing Education (2013) and to the IFNA Position Statement on Advanced Practice Competencies for Family Nursing (2017).

 
Please remember to cite all of the IFNA Position Statements in your publications, course outlines, and conference presentations. Please share the IFNA Position Statements with local and national nursing and health care leaders and organizations. Social media toolkits are available for each IFNA Position Statement. FAMILY NURSING RESEARCH NEWS 
Dr. Rahel Naef (Switzerland) is a clinical nurse scientist at the University Hospital Zurich. Her present research includes the evaluation of family nursing implementation and family-centered care delivery in acute and critical care. Dr. Naef is a member of the acute care research cluster of the IFNA International Research Collaboration Subcommittee. [Read more]

Dr. Megan Aston (Canada) is a professor and Associate Director of Research and International Affairs at Dalhousie University School of Nursing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her family-focused research uses feminist poststructuralism to examine relationships and relations of power between clients, nurses, and other health care providers. She recently received the 2018 Excellence in Nursing Research Award from the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia. [Read more]

The IFNA Conference Committee invites you to begin work on your abstracts for IFNC14 "Social Determinants of Family Health: Expanding Family Nursing Capacity", August 13-16, 2019 in Washington, D.C., U.S.A.  Abstracts will need to address the conference objectives in the areas of family nursing Education, Practice, Research, and Policy/Leadership. The Call for Abstracts will open in mid-July and remain open until mid-October. A Call for Pre-Conference Workshop proposals and Expert Lectures will be issued in July 2018, via email to IFNA members.

Additionally, the IFNA Resource Advancement Committee has prepared an Exhibitor Prospectus that outlines how organizations and individuals can become sponsoring partners, sponsor events, take advantage of "branding" conference related materials, and advertise. Check it out! And share with others, particularly where you work!  Information for the Honor a Family Nurse program, which was very popular at IFNC13, will be disseminated after Abstracts have been accepted in November 2018.

Dr. Catherine (Kit) Chesla (USA) was filmed for an innovative, online, fee-based course just launched by the University of California San Francisco called the UCSF Diabetes Education Program for Health Care Professionals. The program is highly clinically relevant to nurses and family nurses who work with patients and their families with diabetes.

Dr. Lorraine Wright (Canada) and Dr. Janice Bell (Canada) will be offering a 4-day Family Externship in Akureyi, Iceland, October 9-12, 2018.  The workshop will focus on increasing competence and confidence in generalist and advanced practice with families and is open to all health care professionals.
