Dear GHI Members and Subscribers to this Newsletter,
It is a pleasure to be able to write a message for GHI Matters again, it means we succeed in producing one every two months with contents that I expect is of interest to you. It is also a pleasure to notice that several working groups are making significant progress. Separately GHI Members (only) have been sent the first draft consensus document, prepared by the WG Preservation Processing. In the next issue (September 2018) you will notice that also other WGs are making progress. Also many GHI Ambassadors have been active and that is why you will find translations of a basic GHI document in several local languages and more to follow soon. These documents may be shared with everybody of whom readers feel
they should understand more about the basics of food safety.
Like everybody else, GHI too needs to comply with laws and for that reason you will find a message about the new EU data protection law.
I thank everybody helping GHI to make progress for their efforts and wish all of you a good time, wherever you are!

The EU data protection law and the Global Harmonization Initiative
As most of you know from the many message about this subject, on 25 May 2018 the new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) became effective. The objective of the GPDR is to harmonise data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower EU citizens data privacy and to improve the way organisations approach data privacy. The Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI) has your name, email address and other data in the membership database as provided by you when you applied for membership or as updated by yourself at a later date. The data are used solely for the identification of experts in relation to the objectives of the Global Harmonization Initiative. If you are not a member, you receive "GHI Matters" because you subscribed to the newsletter via the website of GHI.
You may always look at your data and make changes via the website using your username and password. If you have forgotten your password or experience any other difficulty, you may mail us at [email protected]. You may also just send a message that you want your data be removed from the GHI database and we shall do so promptly.
"GHI Matters" is sent only to members of GHI and others who have subscribed to the newsletter via the GHI webpage. If you no longer wish to receive the newsletter, just sent a message to [email protected].
Following the advise of our Supervisory Board, we are also developing a data protection strategy that we shall publish on the GHI website as soon as possible.

Translations of ShareSheet 1 into local languages
It is with pleasure to notice that the ShareSheet, which basically is about misconception of food safety, has been translated into many languages and in the coming week(s) all translations will be downloadable from "GHI Share Sheets and White Papers" in the menu

Reasons for translating
Although most scientists understand English well, often the meaning of English messages is not well understood. This is very apparent from reviewing of articles for scientific journals. In many countries English is the first or second language, but even for native English speaking people, message may be misunderstood. This applies to any language-sentences may be ambiguous in all languages, leading to misinterpretation. In scientific matters, it is very important to avoid this and that is the reason that the first GHI Share Sheet had been written: to explain the principle of food safety in an unambiguous way. For scientists in countries where English is not the first language, even messages written in an unambiguous way may be misinterpreted. That is why correct - peer reviewed - translations are highly desirable. This is even more so, because the message are intended to be the basis of information for non-scientists who should understand the message, such as teachers, politicians, journalists, etc.
GHI is about harmonisation of science based food regulations. Decisions are made by the electorate and it is therefore important that the electorate is informed as good as possible. Share Sheet 1 will also be used as the basis for more simplified but still scientifically correct versions, suitable for publication in non-scientific media. The GHI Working Group "Education and Training of Food Handlers", in cooperation with the Special Interest Group Education of ISEKI intend to produce such simple but correct documents - self-evidently when ready to be translated into local languages.

 General GHI Meeting at the 2018 IFT Annual Meeting and Expo

The Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI) was founded in 2004 by the International Division of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) as a network of scientific organizations and individual scientists aiming to achieve harmonized global regulations and legislation.
Although GHI is run and managed by volunteers, the number of GHI members continues to increase. Through its working groups (WGs), GHI identifies activities that will help achieve harmonization. One of the main problems that hampers the progress of the WGs is the ability of WG members to meet and talk about ideas and plans and how to better implement them.
A greet-and-meet GHI membership event is planned for Sunday, July 15, 2018 at 9:00-11:00 am in room Hyde Park AB at the Hyatt Regency at McCormick Place. This is an early notice so that you can include our event in your busy calendar during the IFT Annual Meeting in Chicago.

GHI Working Group: Ethics in Food Safety Practices
The announcement in the previous issue was the result of confusion between the programme of the IUFoST meeting (Mumbai in October 2018) and that of the 1st GHI World Congress (Leiden, Netherlands, March 2019). The meeting will indeed be during the 1st GHI Congress and the agenda will be published on the Congress website (
