Armenia Featured in Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The Smithsonian Institute's Folklife Festival is focusing on the heritage of Armenia this summer, as one of its featured cultural traditions. The festival began June 27 and will continue through July 8, on the National Mall (b/n 12th and 14th Sts., south of the Museum of American History), in Washington, DC.

"Armenia: Creating Home" offers a glimpse into the culture of Armenia and its ongoing exchange with diaspora communities across the world, through food presentations and artisan craft traditions. Click on the link to log onto the  festival website's Armenia content.

FAR CORNER
FAR Assists Syrian-Armenian Entrepreneur

"Armenia has been in our bones since early childhood," says Avo Lakhoyan, a native of Syria who moved from Aleppo to Yerevan last year where he and his wife started their organic hummus company Kanach Snund (Green Food). The couple was recently assisted by FAR's Small Business Assistance Program (SBA), which enabled them to purchase a moped for delivering orders around Yerevan. Currently, they produce 50 kg of hummus a day, which they distribute to about 120 stores and supermarkets. "It's a big issue to drive in the city center by car during the day, with no place to park, traffic jams, etc. In this sense, a moped is very comfortable and fast enough to deliver the packages to our customers," said Avo. FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

On Sunday, July 8, the Armenian Church observes one of its five major feasts: the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The observance recalls Christ's ascent up Mount Tabor, accompanied by his disciples John, James, and Peter. At the mountain's summit, to the disciples' frightened amazement, Christ was transfigured in a blinding white light; the Old Testament figures Moses and Elijah emerged from the mists of time to confer with the Lord; and the voice of God boomed from out of the heavens to affirm Jesus as his Son.

Jesus urged the disciples not to speak of it. But the gospels recorded it for posterity, and the Armenian Church celebrates it every year.

In a uniquely Armenian part of the celebration, churchgoers sprinkle each other with water on the feast day-which Armenians call "Vartavar." What does water have to do with Christ's Transfiguration? For an answer, watch the latest Bread & Salt video. Click on the link to view "Make a Splash"

To learn more about this feast day, download the Diocese's Transfiguration iBook. It is packed with interactive features, including video, music, photo galleries, and more. A version of the book is also available for non-iPad users; click on the following links to view it in your browser or to download a PDF.

Catholicos Karekin II to Raise New Primate to Episcopal Rank

His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, has officially announced that he will elevate newly-elected Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan to the rank of bishop.

In his letter dated June 14, in gracious reply to the petition of the Diocesan Council chairman and secretary, respectively James Kalustian and Mona Karoghlanian, His Holiness wrote: "We impart our pontifical blessings to you for your good and zealous efforts for the brightness of your divinely-protected Diocese. Once again congratulating you on the occasion of the election of your new Diocesan Primate, we are pleased to follow-up on your request to grant Daniel Vartabed the episcopal order. After we confirm the date of the episcopal ordination, you will receive notification accordingly."

The date of the elevation ceremony has yet to be announced. His Holiness confirmed and conferred his blessing on Fr. Findikyan's election to the primacy on May 8, a few days after Fr. Findikyan's election during the 116th Assembly of the Eastern Diocese.

The Primate himself is currently in the city of Presov Slovakia, where he is presiding over an international conference of the Society of Oriental Liturgy. He will return to the Diocesan Center on July 16.

Primate Gathers with Clergy Throughout the Eastern Diocese

To begin his term as Primate, the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan travelled to five regions of the Diocese last month, for a series of face-to-face meetings with the clergy. Inaugurating his new relationship with the pastors as their new Primate, Fr. Findikyan shared his vision for the Eastern Diocese, and reflected on the Armenian Church's mission as lived out in our parishes.

"The church must be the church," he said, explaining that the Diocese must focus its efforts on those matters entrusted by God to the church, and to the church alone.

The gatherings occurred in Florida (June 11), Texas (June 12), the Midwest (June 14), New England (June 19), and the Mid-Atlantic region (June 21).

FAR Helps Young Veteran to Open Business

Levon Hakobyan first dreamed of opening his own computer and electronics service center in 2015, when he started his military service. His dream became a reality at last with the help of the Fund for Armenian Relief's "Education for Returnees Program."

The young entrepreneur opened his business last December, and he runs the service center with his younger brother, Edgar-who is currently enrolled in the FAR program.

The Returnees Program embodies FAR's commitment to Armenia's veterans who have completed at least two years of military service-including those who fought in the "Four-Day War" of April 2016. In partnership with the local NGO Zinvori Mayr ("Soldier's Mother"), FAR initiated the Returnees Program in 2016 to help empower young vets with the skills to enter the marketplace and prosper.

New Choices Video

In the latest episode of the Choices online video series, Fr. Tateos Abdalian reflects on the feelings of outrage expressed by so many of our fellow citizens, in the face of disheartening episodes of random violence. How might our faith guide us in confronting the plague of violence in our society?

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Manis?"14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the proph ets."15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters-one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."10 The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
