St John the Evangelist Parish
July 11, 2018
The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus' Passion and Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus' suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ's love for us. St John will pray the Stations

Let's Finish this Campaign!
Only $13,335 to go!

We have now moved into our 10th week of the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. We have received pledges/gifts from  222  households  for a total of  $87,020 !  We have just over 1000 households in our Parish.  If each one of the remaining 800 households gave just a little we could make our goal  of  $100,355 easily!
It's not too late for you to give!

If you haven't already done so, won't you please consider making a gift this year? No gift is too small. If you're unsure what to give, please consider a gift of $1 a day or $365 or more.

Go online to  https://donate.seattlearchdiocese.org/aca  or use a pledge envelope. If you'd rather call in your gift to the Appeal Office, they can be reached at 800-809-4921. Thank you!
The Youth Mission Trip is collecting items to bring to the migrant workers and a tri-parish food bank.
Our Mission Trip participants will be proud to deliver items donated by St. John parishioners.  Canned food, socks, underwear, gardening gloves, diapers, wipes, formula, children's books, crayons, math flash cards or workbooks, and stuffed animals would all be appreciated.  We will have a BIG COLLECTION at 10:30 mass on August 12.  But you can bring items to the parish office any time between now and August 19.  Thank you for your generosity to people in need!
The children's nursery is OPEN this summer!  For children from 8 months to 3 years old:  During 10:30 mass, in Egan Hall, Jennifer Marquez (a long-time parishioner and care-giver at St. John school daycare) will take care of your child while you attend mass.  Let the children play while you pray!

High School Week of Service and Fun!  August 6-10
Grow your heart, have some fun, get some service hours under your belt! A group of high schoolers will volunteer in the mornings (St. Vincent de Paul, Mary's Place, Northwest Harvest, WestSide Baby) and have fun in the afternoons. Contact Kristin Kent with questions or to sign up:  [email protected]

Middle School Mission trip to the Skagit Valley!  August 19-24
There are a few spots left for this wonderful opportunity for middle-schoolers (including kids who just graduated and will be freshmen next year).  Your child will learn what service and community is all about.  Highly recommended!
The St. John Book Club is reading
Our Lady of the Lost and Found by  Diane Schoemperlen.
Nancy Busch Allen will be hosting the next book club meeting
at 7pm, July 24th at her home - 6526 1st Ave NW.

Thank you Nancy for hosting.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!
Christ the King parish has invited St. John's kids to join their Vacation Bible School this summer!  July 30-August 3 from 9 am to 12:30.  This is for kids who will be in Kindergarten through 5th grade in the f all.  Please see the attached flyers for information and registration.  They are also looking for adult volunteers.   (St. John VBS will return in summer, 2019, when we're no longer under construction!)

I've mentioned before that music and singing are my favorite parts of the mass.  Last weekend, Fr. Crispin encouraged us to spend most of our prayer time in praise and thanksgiving, before adding our petitions.  Praise doesn't come easily to me.  Is it an American culture thing, or just a problem with me?  I don't know.  As I was thinking about praise, the 10:30 choir sang one of my favorite communion meditations, the refrain from He's My Source, repeated TaizĂ© style.  Imagine tweaking the wording a bit, and singing this as a prayer of praise.

You're my source of light that shines in my darkness,
You're my source of living water that I need every day.
You're my sword and my shield, you're the fairest of ten thousand.
You're my bright morning star, my soon coming king, my risen Lord.
[repeat]

[Thanks to the 10:30 choir.]

If you have prayer nuggets you'd like to share with the parish, e mail Bill Marty, [email protected] .  Thanks!
Saint of the Month
Saint Teresa of Calcutta
( 1910-1997, Albania & India)
Feast: September 5

Each month a portrait of the Saint of the Month is displayed in the church in one of the south side shrines.  You are welcome to spend some time reflecting on the life of the Saint and praying for their intercessions.
