  PINHAS
As his reward for his zealousness (in last week's sidra), Pinhas is promised by God that his descendants would be in the possession of the High Priesthood for succeeding generations. God also extends to Pinhas his special covenant of peace.

In preparation for the conquest of Canaan, Moses and Elazar are commanded to take a census of the Israelites to ascertain the number of males above the age of twenty eligible for military service. This census will also provide the basis for the division of the land among the tribes based upon their population. The total is slightly more than 600,000.

Since the apportionment of the land and all future inheritances are restricted to male family members, the case of the late Tzelofchad's five daughters requires special adjudication. The matter is submitted to God by Moses, who is then informed that daughters may inherit if there are no sons.

God discloses to Moses that his end is near. Moses' immediate concern is for the welfare of the people and he asks that a successor with certain qualities be appointed. Moses is directed to present Joshua to the nation.

The sidra concludes with a comprehensive description of all public sacrifices offered daily, weekly and on holidays.

I am away on vacation, but I don't stop reading... Here are some of the articles that I have come across in the past week that I hope may be of interest to you:
God Bless America: 100 Years of an Immigrant's Anthem
This is encouraging for the future of Synagogues, like ours. As members of minyanim age out, have kids who are tweens/teens, they seek the permanence and security that they knew as kids:

There are those who believe that the 2-state solution is no longer viable; there are those who believe that the Palestinians have nothing to give, but that Israel may be able get something in return for a deal with them from the Arab Sunni states. Here is another novel possibility:
The two-state solution is dead. Most one-state solutions are unacceptable to the other side. There is, however, a viable peace plan that appeals to both.

Retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's 'Jewish' Legacy
While I think Hasidic life fascinates all of us, this article/pictorial will be of special interest to those went "On the Road" to Williamsburg, Brooklyn:

Remember that Palestinian professor who was vilified and marginalized for taking his students to Auschwitz? Dr. Mohammed S. Dajani Daoudi is a passionate and devout - but not extremist - Palestinian. He founded and heads an organization called Wasatia, which connotes justice, tolerance, compassion, forgiveness, and most importantly, moderation. He is an advocate for normalization of relationships with Israel and Israelis, and he tries his best to advocate for and combat the  de-normalization of the relationship. It's an uphill battle...

LACING MEMORY Gal Cohen and Zac Hacmon Curated by Wai Ying Zhao
June 29 - July 28
The Clemente Cultural and Educational Center
The exhibition 'Placing Memory' showcases the relations bounded by architecture and collective memory through the collaboration between two Israeli born artists, Zac Hacmon and Gal Cohen. The artists link between demolished architecture in Israel due to gentrification processes, to institutional architecture in New York. The ongoing dialog between the two artists takes a site specific shift and develops to new levels of visual and conceptual conversation. Started on the 23rd floor of a Times Square skyscraper building as part of SPRING/BREAK Art Show 2018, their collaboration continues in The LES Gallery at the historical building of The Clemente Cultural and Educational Center.
