From Fr. Jim Harrison

The Episcopal Church is governed by a bicameral General Convention, which meets every three years, and by an Executive Council during interim years. The General Convention consists of the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies. 2018 marks the Seventy-ninth General Convention of the Episcopal Church and will be held in Austin, Texas from Thursday, July 5 through Friday, July 13.

The General Convention is the governing body of the Episcopal Church. The Convention is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies, which has more than 800 members, and the House of Bishops, which is comprised of nearly 300 active and retired bishops. The Convention meets every three years and has the authority to amend the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church; adopt the budget for the church for the next three years; authorize liturgical texts and amend the Book of Common Prayer; adopt communions and covenants with other churches; set qualifications for orders of ministry and office-holders; elect officers of the General Convention, the Executive Council, and members of boards; and delegate responsibilities to the interim bodies of the Episcopal Church.

The Diocese of Fond du Lac will be represented in the House of Deputies by four Lay Deputies: David Annis, Cheryl Dobrzynski, Amy Heimerl, and Anne Peterson; and four Clergy Deputies: The Rev. Jane Johnson, The Rev. Dr. Erin Kirby, The Rev. Dcn. Sandy Muinde, and The Rev. Ralph Osborne, Chairman of the deputation.

The Rt. Rev. Matt Gunter will represent Fond du Lac in the House of Bishops.

You can learn more about our representatives  here.

If you would like to experience General Convention - worship, legislative sessions, and other events - Episcopal News Service has a General Convention Media Hub that will provide live-streaming of events and post news updates here:  General Convention Media Hub

Parish Life Forum on Finances - Update
At the June meeting of the Vestry, results from the Parish Life Forum Survey were discussed, progress on addressing various cost-cutting measures, and increased revenue was presented, and the treasurer presented a first draft of a revised 2018 budget. As announced at the forum, updates to the parish would come as available.

Potential increased building use is being addressed by a new Building Use Committee. At its June meeting, the Vestry established a seven-member committee to examine the idea of entering a cooperative venture with non-Episcopal entities, starting with Lawrence University, and report on broad, realistic options to the Vestry at its May 2019 meeting. Members of the committee are: Jessica Anderson, Suzanne Fischer, Pete Gilbert, Steve Gilling, Heather McCombs (Chair), Rich Moore, Tina Wilfer, and Fr. Jim Harrison (ex-officio). The first meeting of the committee was held on June 28.

Other actions undergone since the forum include:

1) Budget expenses are being reduced significantly for the remainder of 2018. The specifics are in process for presentation to the Vestry in July for formal amendment of the budget.

2) Giving has seen a spike.

With just these two changes and funds in the operations fund, it is unlikely that any additional draw from the endowments will be needed in 2018.

3) A committee has been established to explore building use options to generate additional revenue (See above).

4) Implementing AmazonSmile and Scrip are in process, both to be up and running by the fall.

5) We anticipate a sizable insurance payment to reimburse for expenses from damage from a 2015 storm. This will buoy our cash balance.

6) Planning is under way for implementing a giving campaign this fall that is realistic and hopeful, targeted and living within our means.

The actions of the Vestry have created time and space to make additional difficult decisions. Budget building for 2019 will be quite a challenge.

Please visit the dedicated website for information from the May 20, 2018 Parish Life Forum on Finances. There you will find the presentation, notes from the forum, and a survey in which you can provide thoughts, suggestions, and questions regarding the forum and church finances. You will also find answers to questions raised during the forum.

Bringing Christ's healing love to hurting people

The Greatest Commandments

From the Gospel of Matthew:
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

"The most important one,"  answered Jesus,  "is this: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.   Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'  The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'   There is no commandment greater than these." Matthew 12:28-31

From the letter of Paul to the Romans:
...whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. - Romans 13:9-10
