COACHES CORNER -- BY MIKE MCGINNIS

Coaches Corner: Sports in Film

It's fair to say that if you are a fan of hockey at any level, then you have seen the movie "Miracle." It's the greatest underdog story grounded in reality that will motivate any person to achieve the impossible. There are many great movies out there centered on sports. Many of these films capture the adversity, glory, and character building elements found in competition. Many well know films include, McFarland, Friday Night Lights, and Remember the Titans. All are great stories that show the true hardships and adversities in sports and life and how to overcome them. I have always believed that one of the biggest elements you learn in playing sports is how to handle adversity and build perseverance in handling any aspect in life. Below are a list of perhaps less well known films that are great to watch as well. These are not the top rated or most popular but all are based on true stories of real people, teams, and programs at all levels. Not every story ends with an Olympic gold medal, but every story does show the power of sports. Each title has a link to its respective web page for further details. Some films are more appropriate for a mature audience as these are not all Disney family films. Meaning, a certain film might be more appropriate for a bantam and too mature for a Mite. Films marked (Mature) many have mature content like curse words, heavier topics like drugs, or more mature elements. But all do share a
good story centered on sports and life.

Forever Strong: (Mature)
Based on one of the most successful rugby programs in America, this story follows a player from juvenile detention center as he ultimately plays against his father in the National Championships. This movie as a great one for coaches and team spirit.

A college basket star, Cory Weissman, suufers a devastating stroke and then perseveres to find new meaning in life both on and off the court. This is a great story highlight the big picture in life and success through perseverance.

4 Minute Mile: (Mature) Netflix
Based on a true story of a high school athlete who wants to break the 4 minute mile in present day and his relationship with an older established coach. This is a great movie that focuses on the mental side of sports.

Never Too Late: (Mature) YouTube
This is a short YouTube documentary of Shad who is a 36 year old plumber from Montana that is chasing his dream to become a professional basketball player. This is a great documentary that show true grit and real life struggles on top of the adversities found on the court.

The Street Stops Here: (Mature) iTunes ( Trailer)
This is a documentary that follows legendary high school basketball coach Bob Hurley Sr. through a season with St. Anthony basketball team, which is one of the most successful programs in the United States. His goals go far beyond the court and this documentary shows how hard success really is and how it translates to life.

Based on a true story of a high school athlete that goes blind but still wants to pursue playing football. This a great story that shows one can overcome any odds and the power of a great support group.

SABRES IN THE NEWS

A familiar name to many Sabre families, Sabre Hockey Alum, Kevin Clare was part of a historic season at Salve Regina University.  The Seahawks made it to the Division III Men's Ice Hockey National Championship Game where they were narrowly defeated by St. Norbert College 3-2 in double overtime.  It was Salve Regina University's first appearance in a title game in any sport.  In true Sabre fashion, Kevin was also recognized individually for his commitment to his community as he was honored among those named in Seahawks in Service.  Congratulations, Kevin.

If you know of other Sabre Alums accomplishments, please send them along as we would like to share the news with our community.
TIPS FROM OUR GOALIE DIRECTOR, ANTHONY PETRAK

Tip #10 Staying In Shape During the Off Season

Hello Goalies!

Summer is right around the corner and many of you are now enrolled in summer sports! It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and stay in shape while having fun in a competitive environment. I would like to talk about the off season and somethings to focus on while you are away from the rink. As an athlete during the off season, it is very important to focus on your conditioning and strength. Hockey is a very demanding physical sport which takes time to build that strength over the course of the season. After being off the ice for two weeks your body has already begun to lose its stamina and flexibility. If you wait until the week before tryouts to get ready, then it's already too late. Your body needs time to build back up to peak performance because nothing happens overnight. As goalies the first thing to go is your timing and reactions. What I refer to as timing is the puck's distance from the goalie and when the goalie should react into the puck making a save that's timed right. This can be fixed easily with a couple of sessions and repetitive shots that are focused on a certain point. You can work on this during the off season by throwing a racket ball off the wall and catching it with you glove or hitting it into a bucket with your blocker helping work on rebound control as well. Leg strength is the next one that starts to go. Staying on a bike and riding around the block a couple times in high gear will help keep your legs in shape. Flexibility, which personally to me is the most important for a goalie, will also dwindle fast. If you're sitting in front of the TV and a break comes on, you should sit on the ground and go through your stretches until your show returns. Staying flexible helps prevent injuries and gets you in position to make those flashy saves. Go ahead and take some time away from the rink. I talked about the importance of giving yourself a break physically and mentally. Take that time and relax! We all need it in order to reboot and come back hungry and ready to eat! I'm not saying hit the gym immediately after the season is finished but just be cautious of how much time you are taking to rest. When you're ready to get back, do not just jump into it. You have to ease into it. Start twice a week with your conditioning and after a month, up it to three times a week for the next month. By the time tryouts arrive you will feel ready to go and better then ever! I encourage every goalie or player to take some time to sit down and write out three things you wish to do better next year and work at it during the summer. I wish everyone a great start to their summer and remember, you get out of it what you put into it!
