Pursuing Higher Education in US in 2021
Higher education institutions in the United States expect to open in a staggered fashion in 2021. However, visa policies and changing regulations are posing a challenge to international student recruitment. As of the fall semester of 2020, there was a decrease of 43% in new international student enrollment, mostly from India and China.

More Canadian Universities to Welcome International Students Amid Pandemic
Canada added several Canadian universities to its list of Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) amid the COVID pandemic. DLIs are institutions that can host international students in the country. All DLIs were required to present an approved COVID-19 readiness plan to obtain or maintain their designation. International students will still be required to quarantine for 14 days.

Students Yet to Travel Home Exempt from English Tier 4 Travel Ban
Universities Minister Michelle Donelan released a letter to students in England to assure them that they can go home once in the period from December 3, 2020 to February 7, 2021. This is despite the new restrictions in going to and from Tier 4 areas introduced on December 20. The restrictions were put in place in efforts to prevent the spread of a new variant of COVID-19. International students planning to travel home will have to check for restrictions put in place by their home countries.

Residence Permits: Foreign Students in France Trapped in Administrative 'Nightmare’
The online system ANEF-séjour introduced in September 2020 is causing problems for some international students in France. The system was supposed to streamline the renewal of residence permits, but delays in processing have placed those waiting in limbo. Students who applied for renewal but have yet to receive their permits have no way of showing they have a legal right to stay in the country.

'Study Melbourne Hub' to be Opened in India to Attract International Students to Victoria as Borders Remain Shut
Victoria Minister for Trade Martin Pakula announced plans to set up Study Melbourne hubs in India to attract new students. These hubs provide a physical location for students in India to gather and access information about the benefits of studying in Victoria once the borders are open. There are currently 4,200 Indian international students studying online from outside Australia.

Innovative ENZ Universities’ Partnership a Key Part of Sector’s COVID-19 Recovery and Rebuild
Eight universities in New Zealand and Education New Zealand announced a new agreement with the University Consortium (NCUK), the UK-based qualifications provider. This will allow students in 30+ countries to start university qualification in New Zealand from home. The partnership is part of a bigger ENZ initiative called the Global New Zealand Education Pathways, which signals a shift in the country’s approach to international education.

Foreign Students are Still Stranded in the United States Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic
International students stranded in the US and unable to get past borders closed to travelers coming from the US are struggling financially. Many also have to contend with anti-Asian and anti-immigrant sentiment. At the same time, universities worry about the potential $3-billion decline in international student enrolment.

Air Canada Suspends Flights Between Canada, U.K. After Warning About New Virus Strain
Air Canada suspended flights to and from the U.K. temporarily in compliance with the travel restrictions put in place on December 20. The restrictions are in response to news about the new COVID-19 variant currently spreading in the UK. Air Canada offered affected passengers with alternate travel options.

‘Surge in Foreign Students Likely in US Universities’
Experts that participated in a webinar organized by the Gujarat Branch of Indo-American Chamber of Commerce expect an influx of applications for student visas to the US starting in January. They refer to the “change of the guard” and the availability of vaccines as factors that will encourage foreign students to consider the US as their preferred destination for higher education.

Apprehension as 21 Vietnamese Students in South Korea Test Positive for Coronavirus
A group of 21 Vietnamese students of the Ajou Motor Vocational College in Boryeong, South Korea, were placed in quarantine after testing positive for the COVID-19 virus. The students are in isolation but the origin of the infection remains unknown, raising some concern in other students. More than 400 students and staff tested came back negative.

All International Students Except Those from UK Can Go Back to Campuses on Jan 1
Malaysian Senior Minister for Security Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that international students could come back to their campuses from Jan 1, 2021, except for UK students. The permission is conditional on compliance with quarantine and testing requirements.

China Remains a Crucial Student Recruitment Market This Year
Sunrise International Education COO David Weeks said that China is an “indispensable recruitment market” for international education despite the predicted slowdown of student flow to the US, UK, and Australia. Weeks presented to the annual conference of the American International Recruitment Council (AIRC) and said Chinese students would still want to study abroad once restrictions are gone.
