Welland doesn't waste any time getting new businesses up and running in the city, according to the municipality's director of economic development, Dan Degazio.
As new large-scale operations such as General Electric, Northern Gold Foods, Welded Tube Canada and a few others take over the industrial park near Highway 140 and Ridge Road, the city's head recruit for new companies said a major factor in the appeal to operate locally is the streamlined process currently in place for building permits.
Degazio said the team at city hall is second to none in the province.

The City of Welland has attracted almost 1.5 million sq. ft of new industrial development since 2015 as a result of its "pro-development" approach and its financial incentive programs.
The city offers a variety of Community Improvement Plan (CIP) programs and financial incentives to attract investment through its Brownfield CIP; Downtown and Health and Wellness Cluster CIP; Gateway Economic Zone CIP; Development Charge Reduction Programs, and Tax Increment Grants (TIGs). Many of these programs are funded jointly by the City of Welland and the Region of Niagara.

Niagara Holdings, a Ontario headquartered business group, announced today the construction of their Phase 1- 20,000 sq ft industrial facility in Welland, located in the Enterprise Industrial Subdivision at Highway 140 and Ridge Road.

A proposed five-storey, 130-unit retirement home residence behind Welland Community Wellness Complex will bring new residential development to an area of the city that needs it, said Ward 1 Coun. Mark Carl.
Carl said once complete, the city will start collecting taxes on a piece of property that sat vacant for years.

Dock project launches in Welland

Students dressed in bright orange safety vests were busy swinging hammers, using drills and moving wooden docks around at the Lincoln Street Docks in Welland Wednesday morning.
The Grade 9 Notre Dame College School students were working on docks they built earlier this year at Niagara Catholic District School Board's Launch Centre on Niagara Street at the Seaway Mall.

An iconic building in Welland is in the process of being converted into a climate-controlled storage facility that will offer 367 units for customers to carefully keep valuables, they don't have room for at home, protected and out of harm's way.
Storage Guyz Inc., a company that already has a smaller site in the city on Vaughan Road and another in Port Colborne, took over the former corporate headquarters of Atlas Specialty Steels late last year and by this fall, plans to open its flagship site at the building.
The company, led by president Sandeep (Sunny) Chera, also plans to keep as much local history intact as it can from when the local steelmaker operated out of the facility.

Donair food processing plant
coming to Welland

Welland will see a food processing plant open up on Enterprise Drive sometime this year, as well as a 1,800-square-metre facility on another lot at the industrial park off of Highway 140, Mayor Frank Campion told city council Tuesday night.
At its meeting, council approved a bylaw authorizing the acceptance of an offer from Athena Donair Distributors Ltd. for the sale of vacant land at 381 Enterprise Dr.
Campion also said an offer on the former PowerBlades factory, at 615 Rusholme Rd., has been accepted and the city will be meeting with the new owners soon.
