April 8, 2019

It's Sunday night, the evening before the annual NAB Show opens. I've spent the day preparing our booth for the Digital Production Buzz's coverage of the show. As always, everything was working perfectly except one errant interface which took  most of the day to isolate and fix. Sigh... there's always something to make a simple setup far more complex than it needs to be...

But our team is REALLY excited about the shows we are planning. To learn the current state of our industry and its technology, visit: www.NABShowBuzz.com.
27 shows, 108 industry leaders in three-and-a-half days. A new live stream every hour, with all past shows available online whenever you have time to listen. Visit here or iTunes. This will be fun!

However, even before the doors opened at NAB, there is big news: VizRT buys NewTek, and Avid partners with Bebop to move its software to the Cloud. We are covering NewTek on our NAB podcasts. I have an article on Avid in this issue.

Apple announced that ProRes RAW is seeing increasing adoption, I have an article about that. Another article talks about Adobe's latest releases - not just announcements this year, but releases - of all its media software.

A new product came out of stealth development mode this last week: ftrack Review. ftrack is a Swedish company that already released a project management software called "ftrack Studio." ftrack Release is a Cloud-based review and approval application. ftrack will be part of our Buzz coverage, as well as Frame.io, who also released three major updates in less than two weeks!

There's a new storage protocol you need to know about: NVMe. This acronym, which stands for "Non-Volatile Memory Express" unlocks the REAL speed in SSD drives. Normally, SSDs are connected via a serial protocol. NVMe connects them via a very high-speed mesh. You'll soon start seeing a variety of new products using this protocol to really boost storage speeds.  Last week, Quantum announced an NVMe server which requires 100 Gb Ethernet (100X the speed of the Ethernet most of us use) to fully deliver the speed of this technology. The only problem is that the Quantum F-series NVMe server starts at $307,000 (US)! So, clearly, this technology has a ways to go before it gets affordable for most of us.

As with every NAB, there will be a lot of new product announcements. The best place to discover them is NABShowBuzz.com. Our first show starts at 11 AM (Los Angeles time) on Monday, with a new show every hour every day of the trade show. (I also recommend you check out the daily news coverage on doddleNEWS.)

Once we get past NAB, I'm looking forward to re-starting webinars, because we'll have lots of new things to talk about. For now, though, all my attention is on creating these hourly webcasts.

As always, I'm interested in your comments. And, after a long nap next weekend, I look forward to chatting with you next Monday. Until then  , edit well.
