From the Pastor

April 15 has come and gone. Some dread the day because they associate it with the annual tax filing deadline. Our family, since 1990, has celebrated the day as the birthday of our oldest child. Katsuo was born on Easter Sunday, so when his birthday falls on Easter, it is very special--and quite rare--indeed (and of course in those years, April 15 is NOT tax day, since it's a Sunday).

The 15th of April is also Jackie Robinson Day. On that one day, in Major League Baseball, all players, coaches, and managers on both teams, and the umpires, wear #42 on their jerseys. Baseball's opening day in 1947 was April 15, and that was the day Jackie Robinson became the first black major league baseball player of the modern era. He wore #42 for the Brooklyn Dodgers. I find it inspiring to see everyone wearing #42 on that day, in solidarity with who Jackie was and what he stood for. Jackie Robinson Day is not only important for baseball, it's important for our country. You don't have to be a baseball fan to be a fan of a great man who combined breathtaking athleticism and sporting talent with tremendous grit and courage.

You don't have to be French or Catholic to be deeply saddened by the fire that damaged Notre-Dame Cathedral (Notre-Dame de Paris [Our Lady of Paris]) on April 15 of this year. It is heartening to see the solidarity of support that is flowing into France from all corners of the globe, along with pledges of money to rebuild. Such expressions of support are greatly needed in the wake of the shock of a catastrophic fire which occurred at the beginning of Holy Week.

I visited Notre-Dame in February of 1982, and still remember the immensity of the structure and the beauty of the Rose windows.

We followers of Jesus Christ are processing the meaning of this fire, even as we prepare to remember the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the coming days. Jesus came to destroy the power of sin and death, so that the failing of our physical bodies "our earthly tents" (as Paul called them) would not be the last word. " For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
2 Corinthians 5:1

Hop Into Easter

HOP INTO EASTER WITH RRCC!

The morning was wet and windy, but spirits and fellowship shined in the RRCC Fellowship Hall during "Hop Into Easter"!

THANK YOU to everyone who donated candy, and to the volunteers who came on Friday to set-up and decorate for the event, as well as the 20 volunteers who braved the weather on Saturday and helped with the Easter Egg Hunt, Christian Music, Photography, Crafts, Games, Food and Fellowship!

We had approximately 15 guests attend the event (of which 10 were children) and enjoy the festivities. Children were able to "fill their baskets" with treat-stuffed Easter Eggs and enjoy donuts and juice, as well as the games and crafts. Although the group of guests was small, the fellowship was abundant and the event was an excellent representation of our mission to "Embrace our neighbors with Christ-like love!"

Plastic Shopping Bags Needed

The Round Rock Serving Center is in desperate need of plastic shopping bags for their food pantry customers. Please bring some and leave the in the Welcome Center on Sunday.
Pantry Focus for April: Toilet Paper

"Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40)
April is "Toilet Paper Month" at RRCC. One necessity that families are unable to purchase with food stamps is toilet paper. Because of the great demand and low supply, families are limited to one roll per monthly visit. Let's load our food pantry shelves in the Welcome Center to overflowing each Sunday! Your donations of toilet paper (or cash or check designated for the Round Rock Area Serving Center) will help stock empty shelves and fill a vital need in our community.

Mark your shopping list every week for the Round Rock Area Serving Center.
Box Tops for Education

"Who woulda' thunk it?!"
A visitor, who now comes frequently,  related that one of the reasons she was drawn to our church originally was by our participation in the Box Tops for Education program. Giving is a blessing in many different ways! Giving when it does not even cost you anything is a double blessing! Put your Box Tops in the marked box where the Serving Center goods reside. Don't forget they expire, so you want to get them in ASAP.

The school decides how to use the money - computers, books, playground equipment - anything it needs.   RRCC contributed 45 more unexpired box tops in March to help raise the school's current total for the year to  $357.70.

  •  You can now pick up a collection paper to act as a reminder or print your own here

  • Bring the labels to church
  •  Place them in the collection box each week.
  • Give yourself a big pat on the back. Box Tops are each worth 10¢ for Union Hill Elementary School
  • Thank you!!

Special thanks to all of the church "small groups" that have volunteered to host a Fellowship Lunch in 2019! This is the most current "draft schedule" of the monthly lunches, with a few menus and details to be determined as the dates get closer. DWM "kicked-off" the lunches this year, with donations of over $400 received for the January luncheon. Revenues from the lunches (moving forward) will be put in a reserve fund for use with property needs, as they arise. These lunches have become a regular source of wonderful fellowship with each other...a time to sit back and enjoy visiting with friends over a meal. Our neighborhood firefighters also enjoy any residual foods!
What a blessing to "Grow" in community and fellowship!

Elder's Prayer Corner/Closing Message

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal' for where your treasure is, there will be your heart. Matthew 6:19-21

Many times our lives can become so busy that when we look for fruit or spiritual fruit, we find ourselves to be barren.  It is tragic to discover that although we thought we had achieved so much, the reality of it was hard to actually discern.  Everyday was filled with this commitment and that commitment.  We truly were busy. Long ago, I heard, "Be wary of the barrenness of a busy life."  There are things we have a tendency to prioritize because we were asked us to "do this task" or "work on this committee."  If we had taken a moment to pause and access the actual worth of the activity we were involved in, we may have lowly bowed our head and realized that, for all of our prattling here and there, nothing of real value was achieved.

Christians are wonderful people but they have a hard time saying "no" and are, therefore, oftentimes taken advantage of by equally well-meaning individuals.  Jesus did not worry about hurt feelings or discontent when He spoke truth.  This is probably why His opinion was not readily sought.  Even in our barrenness, we know to stay away from people who tell us the truth.  Granted, it may just be their version of it but if we have a heart to listen and ears to hear we might find that our hesitancy about doing a certain thing is because we realize that it is not, in the long scheme of things, really important.

During seasonal remembrances throughout the year, we tend to go into overdrive making sure everyone is aware of us and what we can do.  The wise man would have already been living that way each and everyday.  If we cannot impress people about our relationship with Christ each and everyday of the year, how can we expect them to jump on board for this one particular time of year?   Jesus encouraged us to live everyday as godly, caring people.  Your life will reflect that person-hood no matter what time of year it may be.
