Reflections from Kolin & Israel
Last week, our teens returned from a life-changing experience visiting Kolin, in the Czech Republic, and Israel. Below, read some of their reflections from the trip.

Rachel Gass:
During the trip, we talked to IDF soldiers. They talked to us about why they chose combat roles and what serving in the IDF means to them. One soldier said that she wanted a combat role because she wanted her service to be meaningful. They said that the soldiers kept the values of the IDF close to their hearts. As Israel's defense force, they are only to use their guns as a last resort. We also saw the border with Lebanon, which clearly had an Iranian flag and a Hezbollah post on it, overlooking Israel. These experiences opened my eyes to how wrongly American news sources portray Israel. Israel is not an aggressive nation, and the battle between Israel is not about land, but about ideology. The trip made me really proud of Israel, and I will defend Israel always.

When we sang Hatikvah in the hidden synagogue in Terezin, I felt chills. A flood of emotion washed over me. People died for believing in Israel, and now Israel exists. We can sing Israel's national anthem in a place where people hoped for Israel's existence. That's amazing.

Joshua Ostach:
On our third day in Israel, we hiked up to Mount Arbel, and looked out at the beautiful views of Mount Hermon and the Sea of Galilee. Here Rabbi Kedar asked us to write down a reflection of what Israel has meant to us so far. This reflection is the best way that I, personally, can describe this trip: I have learned, and I am home. A home away from home, which holds love, beauty, tranquility, fascination, faith, comfort, safety, friends, family, nature, animals, music, peace, harmony, and above all, the presence of Adonai.

Lyla Prass:
This is a letter that I wrote to a victim of the Holocaust, specifically in the concentration camp Terezin. The prompt for this letter was given to us by Rabbi Kedar as we were sitting in the cemetery in Terezin. She asked us to write a letter to a victim of the holocaust that died while imprisoned in this concentration camp. She asked us to conjure up an image in our minds of the recipient of our letter. Emily is the mother of three small children. She sacrifices everything in order to help her children survive. She was strong, selfless, courageous, and independent. Emily was a source of strength and comfort to everyone around her. Through this letter I wanted to express my gratitude for her sacrifice and to honor her legacy and the legacy of so many like her.

Dear Emily,
I am in awe of your courage and strength. You were a beacon of light in the midst of the never ending dark that was the Holocaust. Through your sacrifice I will be able to stand in the land of Israel with my head held high, proud of my Jewish heritage. I know that this was not the life you chose and I am deeply sorry that you had to endure the tremendous amount of pain you must have experienced while imprisoned in Terezin. Emily, your life was not lost in vain for it continues to inspire me and Jews all across the world to fight for equality and love and to fight against tyranny and hate. You will always be remembered for your love of your family and your faith in humanity. I promise to work for the rest of my life to ensure that you and the six million Jews that perished in the Holocaust will never be forgotten.
With all my love,
Lyla Prass

Noah Shapiro:
As we made our way through Terezin, I was amazed at how much striking beauty can blossom out of the most outlandish and murderous places. Even as we sat outside the crematorium used to burn the dead, I was amazed by the cheerful chirping of the birds, the noises of the wind blowing through the trees, the butterflies, the puffy white clouds, and other oddities that make this memorial a place of serene thought and of powerful remembrance.

Abby Tzinberg:
I am not someone who is often at a loss for words, and yet when people ask me about my trip, I find myself speechless. The majesty of Israel is awe inspiring and the lessons that are embedded in every nook and cranny of the state cannot be found anywhere else. This trip inspired me to learn more about my world, to take time to enjoy the places I go and the people I go with, and to pursue justice.

JCFS School Supply Drive
Do you remember  the excitement of opening that new box of crayons on the first day of school? Recall the thrill of sporting that new backpack? For many of the  families served by JCFS (Jewish Child and Family Services),  the expense of preparing a child for the new school year is beyond their means. They struggle to pay rent and keep food on the table. These caring parents value education - they want to see their children enter the new school year prepared and proud.

BJBE's Early Childhood Program at the Chava Center and Sisterhood are joining together to support the JCFS School Supply Drive. During the month of July we will be collecting the following items:
Solid Colored Backpacks   |    Pens/Pencils   |    Crayons/Colored Pencils
Erasers/GlueSticks   |    Washable Markers/Highlighters   |   Folders
Spiral Notebooks/Loose Leaf Paper   |    Rulers/Scissors

A collection box is in the tzedakah niche.  To make a monetary donation or if you have questions, please contact Sharon Sabin Thank you in advance for your generosity.
