FOUNDATIONS FUND INTERNET OF WATER LAUNCH
The Internet of Water, a new project to improve our nation's water data infrastructure, has been awarded start-up support by six foundations. The S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the Kingfisher Foundation, The Cynthia & George Mitchell Foundation, the Pisces Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, and the Water Funder Initiative collectively awarded the Nicholas Institute $1 million in grant funding. Read about how the funding will support the development of a national digital water data and information framework for sharing, integrating, and disseminating public, governmental data to characterize and forecast the quantity, quality, and uses of water across the United States. 
FAO STUDY FEATURES SMALL-SCALE FISHERIES WORK
The latest edition of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) report released this month at the Committee on Fisheries meeting highlights the importance of fishing and fish farming to people's livelihoods. It discusses a 2020 study by the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions' John Virdin, the Nicholas School of the Environment's Xavier Basurto, and partners at The WorldFish Center, and the FAO. Read about the forthcoming study that the SOFIA report says is expected to be "the most extensive compilation to date of information available on the diverse contributions of small-scale fisheries to communities and countries around the world." 
CONFERENCE: HARNESSING THE POWER OF DATA
Read a new proceedings by the Nicholas Institute, the Sustainable Energy Transitions Initiative, and the Energy Access Project at Duke University that highlights advances in energy access data analytics and outlines data-related energy access hurdles. It concludes that better data will inform more appropriate project sizing and design, improve forecasting, enhance customer service, and help align investor expectations in new technologies.
