In mid-March, members of the AAVLD Executive Committee and Government Relations Committee (GRC) met in Washington D.C. and had a series of productive meetings with valued organizational partners and key influencers.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our friends at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) for their hospitality during our visit! They graciously shared their conference rooms for our meetings and helped make our trip a success.

Our top priority during the visit was to support the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). It was readily apparent during our meetings that Washington understands the critical role that the NAHLN plays in protecting our animal agriculture industry and the U.S. food supply. Our discussions centered on the need to fully fund the NAHLN with appropriations in the current U.S. Farm Bill.
Another topic that we discussed was the risk of the introduction of African swine fever (ASF) virus into U.S. swine industry. Specifically, the recent and rapid steps that the NAHLN has taken to increase testing capacity for this devastating virus. NAHLN leadership and member laboratories should be proud of the tremendous efforts taken during this expansion in testing capabilities and capacity.
We also had productive discussions with our partners in the APHIS-VS, NAHLN/NVSL, NIFA, AVMA, Animal Agriculture Coalition, FDA-CVM, CDC, FSIS, ARS and DHS. The next time you interact with our partners in these organizations, I ask that you join me in expressing our appreciation for their continued support of AAVLD and the NAHLN.

The Providence, RI meeting is now only few months away. Each year members share with peers and attendees new scientific information via scientific meetings through posters and talks. The abstract submissions are now open in the portal. The meeting brings best science in area of animal diagnostics. There are rewards to be won for best posters and best scientific presentation, many for the students/residents including the travel awards. AAVLD awards over $25,000 to attendees including staff , students and residents each year.

The University of Guelph is seeking applications for the position of Co-Executive Director, Laboratory Services Division (LSD) and Director, Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) within the Office of Research. As one of Canada’s premier animal disease laboratories, the Co-Executive Director LSD/Director, AHL has the unique opportunity to lead and inspire a high performing team to provide world-class client service in a rapidly evolving scientific environment and provide high-value analytical and diagnostic services to the agriculture, food and veterinary sectors. The Laboratory Services Division, comprised of the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) and the Agriculture & Food Laboratory (AFL), is a self-sustaining business. Operating within the University of Guelph, Laboratory Services is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA)-University of Guelph Agreement and by fee-for-laboratory services provided to industry, government, and researchers. Under the leadership of the Associate Vice-President Research, Agri-Food Partnership, the Co-Executive Directors (AHL & AFL) have overall responsibility for ensuring the operational and financial success of the entire division and that the two laboratories remain viable entities within the greater agreement between the University and OMAFRA. Both Co-Executive Directors also fulfill the role of Director of their respective laboratories. As Director, Animal Health Laboratory, the incumbent is responsible for all aspects of the management and operation of AHL, an American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians-accredited, full-service, all-species veterinary laboratory, which, in partnership with the Ontario Veterinary College, functions as the
provincial veterinary reference laboratory. The wide spectrum of test results generated by the AHL provides key animal health surveillance data to OMAFRA in support of domestic and global viability of Ontario’s livestock industry. The Ontario Animal Health Network (OAHN), which is managed by the Director, AHL under the OMAFRA-UofG Agreement, plays a critical role in provincial and national animal health surveillance initiatives. Ideal candidates must hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and must be eligible to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario. Candidates must also have a Doctoral degree in a veterinary laboratory medicine discipline (e.g., PhD, DVSc), preferably with specialty board certification. Coupled with the educational requirements, the successful candidate ideally has at least eight years of progressive experience leading the operation of, and teams within, a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Candidates will have a track record of supporting and delivering exemplary client service, operational excellence and people leadership as well as have proven relationship building, collaboration and communication skills, presentation skills and financial acumen.

Membership terms are by calendar year (January-December) and membership dues are payable by November 15th of the preceding year (to ensure inclusion in the annual membership directory, eligibility for committee involvement, and receipt of all six issues of the JVDI). Note: In order to receive a discounted rate for the Annual Meeting registration, you are required to be a current AAVLD Member.

The goal of JVDI in Focus is to bring attention to an interesting article appearing in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation. This month’s focus is on an article in the upcoming May Focus Issue on Backyard Poultry:
“Causes of mortality in backyard poultry in eight states in the United States” by Kyran J. Cadmus, Aslı Mete, Macallister Harris, Doug Anderson, Sherrill Davison, Yuko Sato, Julie Helm, Lore Boger, Jenee Odani, Martin D. Ficken, and Kristy L. Pabilonia.

Abstract. A comprehensive understanding of common diseases of backyard poultry flocks is important to providing poultry health information to flock owners, veterinarians, and animal health officials. We collected autopsy reports over a 3-y period (2015–2017) from diagnostic laboratories in 8 states in the United States; 2,509 reports were collected, involving the autopsy of 2,687 birds. The primary cause of mortality was categorized as infectious, non-infectious, neoplasia or lymphoproliferative disease, or undetermined. Neoplasia or lymphoproliferative disease was the most common primary diagnosis and involved 42% of the total birds autopsied; 63% of these cases were diagnosed as Marek’s disease or leukosis/sarcoma. Bacterial, parasitic, and viral organisms were commonly detected, involving 42%, 28%, and 7% of the birds autopsied, respectively, with 2 or more organisms detected in 69% of birds. Our findings demonstrate the importance of educating flock owners about disease prevention and biosecurity practices. The detection of zoonotic bacteria including paratyphoid salmonellae, Campylobacter spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and Mycobacterium avium, and the detection of lead and other heavy metals, indicate public health risks to flock owners and consumers of backyard flock egg and meat products.

Aslı Mete is the guest editor of the Focus Issue on Backyard Poultry. She is a board-certified pathologist with a research focus on avian species. As a diagnostic pathologist, Dr. Mete works on disease surveillance, herd health management, and public health in avian species, livestock, and wildlife. The cases from her clinical work frequently lead to further questions and research projects within the University and elsewhere, including her work on diseases of wild and domestic avian species and backyard chickens. In investigations of diseases in wild birds, Dr. Mete evaluates emerging conditions in relation to ecological and environmental systems integration and affects. She is an associate professor of anatomic pathology at the School of Veterinary Medicine in the California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory System, Davis, CA.

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing impacts are being felt in most states across laboratories, regulatory agencies, farming/hunter communities or communities in general. Most laboratories currently approved for testing are seeing an increase in sample submissions. CWD was an important part of discussion in March at a recent Deer Farmers Association meeting in Pennsylvania.

Dr Tewari from the Harrisburg PA lab attended the meeting addressing the needs of deer farmers in the region. There is lot of interest in antemortem testing, environmental testing and finding all factors that predispose animals to CWD.
|
|
AAVLD Website Update
The AAVLD website has content that is needed by, and useful to members, the Accreditation Committee, JVDI/publications, other standing & special committees and other interested parties. However, the current version went live in 2012 and over the years, as more and more content was added, it has become difficult to navigate and easily find what is needed. Therefore, the Executive Board has formed a Website Task Force to investigate, plan and guide an update/makeover of the organization website to make it easier to find and use the information and services available there. One of the first Website Task Force tasks will be to survey members on the issues they encounter on the current website, and what features are needed, and those wanted in the new website.
