MEDITATION

Fatih Ates, Director of San Francisco and East Bay

As we have learned from too many tragedies involving gun violence, including the Isla Vista (2014) and Thousand Oaks (2018) shootings, prior to the violence, shooters may exhibit certain warning signs, but those behaviors may not be severe enough to allow authorities to take preventive action. Immediate family members are often in the best position to see and recognize these warning signs and may turn to law enforcement, social service providers, or their faith community for help and referrals. Effective in 2016, California's Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO) law is a tool that addresses this problem by allowing concerned family members, as well as law enforcement officers, to obtain an order restricting someone's access to firearms. In this presentation, Julia Weber will provide information on the GVRO and how organizations and professionals can use this important legal tool to help prevent gun violence and suicide.

Presenter: Julia Weber Fellow

Julia Weber joined Giffords Law Center in 2018 as a fellow focused on  gun violence restraining order implementation efforts. She is an expert on domestic violence policy who has spent her career working to develop and implement promising practices to prevent and respond to violence.  Prior to joining Giffords Law Center, Julia worked for over 17 years with the Judicial Council of California's Center for Families, Children & the Courts, where she served as co-counsel to the Family and Juvenile Law Advisory Committee and supervised the Access to Justice Unit. Julia has staffed many task forces and working groups addressing family law, intimate partner violence, and child welfare, and has extensive experience drafting and implementing protective and restraining orders and firearms relinquishment policies. She presents regularly at conferences and has trained hundreds of court staff nationally on preventing bias in working with victims and survivors, utilizing trauma-informed approaches in providing court services, and using visuals to communicate more effectively about the law.  Julia attended Washington University School of Law and the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, where she obtained her combined degrees in law and social work. She is a trained mediator and a member of the California bar. Julia also serves as an expert witness and is an adjunct professor at Golden Gate School of Law, where she teaches domestic violence law.

LEST WE FORGET

A project by Luigi Toscano

April 17 - May 19, 2019
San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza

LEST WE FORGET , a Holocaust remembrance project designed by German-Italian artist Luigi Toscano, is coming to San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza from April 17 - May 19, 2019. 78 large-scale photographs of Holocaust survivors honor individuals living in the United States, Israel, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Austria, the Netherlands, and the Bay Area with dignified portraits. 15 of them were recently taken in San Francisco and the Bay Area. These pictures are at the center of the unique photographic installation, LEST WE FORGET and ensure that we do not forget the Holocaust and inspire us to fight hatred today.

LEST WE FORGET has been on view at the Mall in Washington D.C., the United Nations in New York City and Boston Common, as well as at prominent outdoor sites in Europe. Displaying the portraits in public spaces makes the exhibit accessible to everyone. Over 1 million people worldwide have seen it so far.

In conjunction with the photo exhibition, the Goethe-Institut San Francisco and our community partners will present numerous educational programs, film screenings at the San Francisco Public Library, a panel discussion, public tours and other events throughout San Francisco. .

The exhibit is presented by the Goethe-Institut San Francisco and the German Consulate General San Francisco, with heartfelt gratitude to Barbro and Bernard Osher for their generosity. With appreciation for the support of the Consulate General of Israel, the Consulate General of Italy, and the Italian Cultural Center. Special thanks to the San Francisco Arts Commission and San Francisco Recreation and Parks and numerous community partners.
