Congregational Care Update
|
|
New! Online Request Forms for CONGREGATIONAL CARE
To increase our ability to provide congregational and pastoral care with graceful efficiency, Hennepin Avenue UMC is introducing
online care request forms
which allow you to share information at your convenience in real time.
From your phone, tablet or laptop,
you can share a prayer request or celebration, let us know about hospitalizations for you and your loved ones, or make confidential pastoral prayer requests
.
To use the online request system, go to
haumc.org/care
from any of your devices. You can also
call the office (612-871-5303)
, or
email
pastoralcare@haumc.org
. The pastor on call will contact you as soon as possible.
During this time, when we are all being asked to respond quickly to rapid change, congregational care is one of the most important gifts of spiritual community. It offers us stability and connection and hope. In the words of the Servant Song, “we will share each other’s joy and sorrow, till we've seen this journey through.” God is with you, and so are we.
If you have a prayer request, an emergency, or another life event, reach out through
haumc.org/care
.

There are three easy ways to access the worship videos. We strongly encourage you to
practice using one or more of these
before
Sunday morning.
If you need help, we invite you to find a friend, family member, or neighbor who can help you get it set up, or to call us here at the church.
- On your desktop computer, open an internet browser (i.e., Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and go to the live stream page of the Hennepin website—or just click here: www.haumc.org/live. If the worship service has started, you will see an active video on the page. If the service has not started yet, you will see a black box and a note about how soon the live stream will be “on.” When it is time for the service to begin, “refresh” the web page and the video will be shown live.
- Download the HAUMC Live Stream app to your mobile device (smartphone or tablet). Go to the App Store and search for HAUMC Live Stream. When you see our church logo cross, you will know you’ve found the right app. Click “Get,” and when the download is complete, click “Open.” When it is time for the worship service to begin, open the app, and the live video will show up automatically.
- Watch the live stream on our Facebook page, Facebook@HennepinAvenueUMC. If you already follow us on Facebook, simply visit our Facebook page at the time of the worship service and scroll down to watch the live video. Otherwise, type “HennepinAvenueUMC” into the search bar on your Facebook page, and then click on the link to our page.

Advocacy Alert:
Urge Leaders to Provide Daytime Shelter Options
The leaders of Street Voices of Change have been united in their request for warm, safe places for people who are experiencing homelessness to gather so that hygiene needs (especially hand-washing)
can be met
and so they can practice safe social distancing.
To facilitate your advocacy we are providing the following language:
Thank you for the steps you are taking to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of people living and working in Hennepin County in response to the COVID-19 threat. Today I am writing/calling/emailing you to urge additional steps to protect and meet the needs of neighbors who are experiencing homelessness. I am most concerned about where our neighbors who are single adults and experiencing homelessness can go during the day when most shelters are closed. Along with Street Voices of Change, Align Minneapolis and my congregation, we urge you to think creatively with us and provide additional resources to help our most vulnerable neighbors stay safe.

The Dignity Center Remains Open
People experiencing homelessness are exempt from the Governor's shelter-at-home order. The Dignity Center will continue to serve people living on the margins of our community, for whom "social distancing" is not an option.
We are open and operating with limited interaction. We have entered phase three of our COVID-19 programming support plan. This includes connecting with participants remotely; community check-ins by phone and email; assistance requests through appointments; and serving a home-cooked meal to go.
The population we serve is anxious and has nowhere to go to access information or support. There is much work yet to be done as we walk with people on their path to stability.
Here are some ways we are adapting our services:
“LIMITED INTERACTION” SERVICES FOR EXISTING PARTICIPANTS
Existing Participants working on goals can make requests for assistance through email or by phone.
Existing Participants will receive limited services at one of the 3 doors at the Dignity Center. We plan to provide services with limited interaction, including our home-cooked meals Dignity to Go!
GARAGE DOOR: DIGNITY FRESH-TO-GO MEALS
Our home-cooked meal will be served from the garage in to-go containers and can be enjoyed in The Dignity Center’s basement area with cereal, Starbucks and hot coffee.
DRIVEWAY DOOR: TOILETRIES
Hygiene kits, toiletries, and other items will be available at the door off the driveway.
FRONT DOOR: IN-PERSON CONSULTING
Appointments for referrals, consultation and/or assistance will be made from the front door (through appointment only, please call ahead).
WE WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE WHAT WE CAN, FOR AS LONG AS WE CAN, AS BEST AS WE CAN...and we hope to return to normal services as soon as we can!

Drivers Needed for Meals on Wheels
Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church is seeking Meals on Wheels delivery drivers for Fridays. HAUMC volunteers arrive between 11-11:30am to pick up packed meals a delivery sheet and a binder containing a map, directions from place to place, and a car window message notifying police and others that meals are being delivered. Most routes take 60-90 minutes, and two volunteers per route means one can drive and the other navigate. This is a vital ministry, not only for delivery of food, but because often volunteers are the only personal contact the client has throughout the day.
Contact Peggy Kjorstadt-Kaatz for more information or to sign up at kaatzpjs@hotmail.com or 612.388.0413.

Action Alert! Support Shelters & Rental Assistance
We need your help encouraging government leaders to pass a COVID-19 response package immediately that includes $50 Million of support for emergency shelters and $100 Million in rental assistance.
People experiencing homelessness in Greater MN are sleeping in their cars, living in a storage unit or abandoned building, camping in cold weather, staying in a shed or garage, secretly sleeping at their place of employment, or being doubled/tripled up. This is why we need to invest $50 Million in a COVID-19 response for our shelter systems.
We also need to invest $100 Million into rental assistance because workers with unemployment insurance will receive half their typical earnings. 1 in 4 Minnesota households are already housing cost-burdened, and if we don't do something immediately this number will drastically increase. On average, food service workers are left with $63 and retail sales workers are left at $329 each month to make ends meet. These workers won't be able to pay for food, medicine, and other household needs.
Right now we are told to 'stay home' during this pandemic, but for people experiencing homelessness and staying in overcrowded and underfunded shelters, going home is not an option. We need these investments to save lives.
Learn more and take action.

Take GCORR's Free Implicit Bias Course
“Implicit bias: What we don’t think we think” is a new online course created by The United Methodist General Commission on Religion for anyone interested in learning and teaching others about implicit bias.
The learning engagements included in each section allow for individual work, group work, and optional sermon preparation. All of the learning engagements recognize and lift up the reality that context is known best by those on the ground.

Update from the Legacy Giving Task Force
Throughout the month of February, the Koinonia Legacy Task Force (Task Force) invited the congregation to submit ideas of how the church could invest proceeds from a potential sale of Koinonia Retreat Center that would support the strategic initiatives of the church.
Thank you to the many who responded! It has been incredibly energizing to hear of your thoughts and ideas. The Task Force is currently working to compile the responses in order to provide a report to the Strategic Council in April.
At this time, the sale of Koinonia Retreat Center is not imminent; therefore, no formal recommendation is being made as to the use of the potential proceeds. As the Task Force collaborates with the Strategic Council as to next steps, we invite you to continue submitting your ideas to
koinoniaconversations@haumc.org
