How Will the New Bridge Get Its Name?
The first step in the bridge-naming recommendation process is here. If you have names to suggest, hold tight--you'll be able to share them soon. FIRST, a small committee of community members will form to act as an objective group to move the process forward. They'll weigh all names from the community, narrow down options, listen again to residents, and make a final name recommendation to City Council. Committee members must not be partial to any names . The group will meet three to four times between August and December. Six residents are needed. Please note: Residents, the committee, and/or Council do not make the final name decision; the state does during its 2019 session.

Interested? Fill out the online application here . Each Council member will appoint one resident and the Mayor will appoint two residents from the submitted applications.
TIMELINE
July: Community committee forms
July-Aug: Residents submit names
Sept: Committee narrows names
Oct: Residents choose favorites
Nov: Committee gives Council recommendation for bridge name
Dec: Council votes on name to recommend to legislators
Jan-May: Legislators bring name forward and state votes on final name

* Our residents, committee, and Council only provide a name recommendation; the state makes the final decision.
FYI: The bridge project has its very own Facebook page with great photos and up-to-date details. You can also see what it will feel like to drive the new bridge during this video simulation that shows all the changes, including the new bike-pedestrian lane and overlook.

Can You Find It?
This scholarly gentleman, Reverend Eric Norelius, is hiding in plain sight somewhere. Can you find him? He's noted locally for starting Gustavus Adolphus College right here in town. Founded in 1862 as an elementary school, Gustavus was first named Minnesota Elementarskola. Although it moved out of town the next year, the school continued to thrive and started offering college courses a decade later. Where is this marker located?

Click here to tell us your answer, and you might win one of our summer prizes. We'll report the answer and winner in the next issue of City Beat.
Congratulations to Nancy McCleary. She's the first winner of our regular contest "Can You Find It?" Nancy knew this historical marker lies along the paved path that travels under Highway 61 connecting lower A.P. Anderson Park and the Cannon Valley Trail. The sign shows the general location of Red Wing's "Poor Farm" where people were able to live and farm together when they had no other income. Nancy has already happily collected her prize. Try your luck this week. Happy hunting!
Three Stories of Scaffolding Fills the Sheldon
Dust is flying inside the Sheldon Theatre as crews tackle the building's massive interior restoration project. What's happening now? Take a look at this one-minute video to find out. You may not recognize the inside of Red Wing's jewel box, but when the dust settles in September, its doors will open again to one of the Sheldon's best lineups ever (some might even say revolutionary).
More Housing Coming to Red Wing
Red Wing will soon find some relief from its housing shortage. Up to 250 rental units will be built in the Mayo-Red Wing area over the next three years. Keller-Baartman Properties LLC is leading the project, which includes a mix of apartments, senior housing, townhomes, and medium- and low-income housing. On Monday Council members approved the project, which includes tax increment financing (TIF) from the City. Read the Resolution here. Questions? Call Randal Hemmerlin at the HRA at 651-388-7571.

Red Wing Designated as a Purple Heart City
"The Purple Heart is the only decoration that attests, without question, to the bearer having been in combat. It is one for which an individual cannot be recommended; it can only be earned." --The Military Order of the Purple Heart of MN
Red Wing has taken the necessary steps to become a Purple Heart City, as Mayor Dowse proclaimed at Monday's City Council meeting. Colonel Richard J. Johnson, United States Marine Corps, Retired, was present to receive the proclamation and the gratitude of our community on behalf of all who have sacrificed in combat for our country.
A Community Growing Together
Need some space to dig in your green thumb? Consider getting a plot in one of Red Wing’s two community gardens. They're already blooming with plants, and the resident gardeners who tend these plots get even more out of the experience than tasty herbs and vegetables. Our community gardens are on display in this week’s episode of City 101.
Winger Boy's Baseball Hits it Out of the Park

Have you heard the buzz about the  Red Wing Winger Baseball  team? Their outstanding season not only earned them the distinction of being one of three Class AAA teams to finish with a victory at the state tournament, but they also earned a commendation from the Mayor; check it out!
All In a Day's Work

Over the last 30 years, he's been instrumental in making sure Red Wing's public spaces are safe and beautiful.
