Mayor Carolyn Amyotte Message
|
On behalf of North Kawartha Township, I would like to thank Principal Karen Brohart, Round 2 Contracting, Tucker’s Marine and our hardworking Lion’s Club and all the dedicated volunteers who made the Christmas Tree possible. Special thanks to Jim and Charlotte Empringham who gave me permission to light up the tree. I drove through a blizzard just to see it and share this wonderful story with all of you. The tree is SPECTACULAR! Merry Christmas everyone!
A Holiday Poem - by Mayor Amyotte
The year was 2020 on a cold November morn,
When little Blue Spruce was blown down in a storm.
Her people were heartsick to save Blue if they could.
But they feared the worst, that she’d end up as firewood.
Yet holiday magic was in the air that day,
A destiny of kindling would not be her fate.
An event that brought sadness and tears,
Would become a centerpiece of celebration and cheers.
The tree was lifted and taken so gently,
To the village of Apsley, whose Heart was all ready.
Little Blue Spruce has become OUR Christmas Tree,
Bringing light, love and joy, to our entire community!

Finance Department
All tax bills have been issued for 2020. Your next tax bill for the 2021 year will be mailed in February, with due dates at the end of March and the end of May. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, council waived all penalty and interest charges on all outstanding property taxes for the months of April to and including December, 2020. As of January 1, 2021 penalty and interest of 1.25% per month will be applied to all outstanding taxes. If you have not received a copy of your bill or are unsure if your taxes have been paid in full, please contact the Deputy Treasurer through email or at 705-656-4445 extension 233 or the Accounting Assistant through email or at 706-656-4445 extension 235.
Make paying your taxes easy for you! It's not too late to sign up for the pre-authorized payment program with a choice of three different payment schedules. You can find our pre-authorized payment program form on our website with instructions on how to sign up. If you have any questions about the pre-authorized payment program, please contact the Deputy Treasurer through email or at 706-656-4445 extension 233.
Please note that the 2020 MPAC Assessment update for all Ontario properties has been postponed until further notice due to COVID-19. Property assessments for the 2021 property tax year will continue to be based on the fully phased-in current values. This means your property assessment for the 2021 property tax year will be the same as the 2020 tax year, unless there have been any additional changes to your property. For more information, please contact MPAC at www.mpac.ca or 1-866-296-6722.
Why would your property taxes change if your property assessment stayed the same? Property taxes are calculated by multiplying the assessment value, provided by MPAC, by the tax rate determined by the Township of North Kawartha, Peterborough County, and the Province of Ontario’s education rate. If the tax rate changes as a result of the rates provided by the Township, the County, or the Province, that will affect your total taxes for the year. Please refer to our website for more information on the tax rate and how it is calculated.

Winter Safety Tips from our
Fire Department
Remember: NO ICE IS SAFE ICE!
Conditions on all ice can change in an instant. Heed warning messages and stay off frozen waterways if possible.
With the holidays comes the use of candles! Whether to make the house smell like baking without lifting a finger, creating a festive atmosphere or providing light during a power outage. The Township of North Kawartha Fire Department wants you to remember these tips when lighting a candle at home.
Here are some tips:
- Flashlights are much safer sources of light than candles.
- If you must use candles, make sure they are on a secure base, do not leave them unattended or in places where they can fall or set alight flammable items. Keep them away from draughts and children
- Be aware of fire hazards - keep candles away from curtains and other flammable objects.
- Extinguish all candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
