July Staff Picks
g
The Stranger in the Woods by Michae Finkel
"In a search for books about the woods of Maine, I discovered this true account of Christopher Knight... Finkel's telling of this yearning in humankind for solitude made me lovingly stroke my sleeping bag and wish I had not given my tents to my kids." - Linda

Wonder at the Edge of the World
by Nicole Helget
"From the author of The End of the Wild! Science and magic, abolitionists, slaves and pre-Civil War sentiments, whaling ships, and more, but it's the characters who are thrown about for whom you will come to care deeply." - Linda

Julián is a Mermaid
 by Jessica Love
Mesmerizing and full of heart, Love's author-illustrator debut about a young boy wanting to become a mermaid is a radiant celebration of individuality and unconditional love. One of the great picks from last month's Drag Queen Storytime, and a Kids' Indie Next pick!

Indies Introduce: What's New in July

What is Indies Introduce? Booksellers from across the nation do what indies do best: find and showcase undiscovered debut authors and their books every season, for both kids and adult titles. Here's some of the notable Indies Introduce releases this month from the Summer/Fall Kids' list!

Don't forget about the adult list, though. (Anyone finished reading There There or Convenience Store Woman yet?) There's quite a number of adult Indies Introduce titles releasing in July! - Destenie

Where the Watermelons Grow by Cindy Baldwin (7/3): A tender and empathetic depiction of mental illness, this story is as sweet as summer watermelon, even while the reader follows young narrator Della navigating her Mama's "sickness" the best she can.

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning (7/31): This re-imagining of The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen's, not Disney's) is not only a tale of the "Other," not only the story of a strong female protagonist, but an origin of one of the most iconic fairy tale villains.
