The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center presents a new Writer-in-Residence award sponsored by poet and rancher Glenna Luschei. The first recipient is acclaimed poet Steven Sher.
On Wednesday, November 7th, there will be a free poetry workshop from 4:00 - 5:30 PM and a reading from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. Traveling from his home in Jerusalem, Israel, Sher is visiting New York City and Southern California to read from recent work and offer workshops for both experienced and beginning poets.
Sher, who has published more than a dozen books,  seeks  "that sense of wonder in everyday interactions and objects, to find awe in the commonplace." He describes poetry as a "deeply felt spiritual exploration: often immersed in loss as well as healing, grief as well as belief, memories of comfort and love." He will guide poets to  speak to larger human concerns and universal truths.
The evening event will include a reading by Sher and an open microphone for other poets to share. Both events are free and open to the public and will take place in the McIntyre Family Studio at 855 Linden Avenue in Carpinteria. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 805-684-7789.
