Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski
has been awarded a Keeler Family Intra-University Professorship for the 2019-2020 academic year. He will spend the fall semester working with researchers at KU’s Achievement & Assessment Institute (AAI) and in the Department of Educational Psychology in the School of Education to advance a project that comprehensively defines data literacy and develops interdisciplinary materials for teaching and assessing data literacy. ACES: The Society for Editing conference

– attended the national conference of ACES: The Society for Editing last week in Providence, Rhode Island. McLendon presented a session called “Small Changes, Big Difference” and Berendzen presented a session called “Is This Resource Reliable?” Smith won an ACES scholarship and also took second place in the student division of the ACES headline contest.

DIAG Lecture: Ron Smith
, editor the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service and former managing editor for news at USA Today, will visit the J-School on April 9 and give a lecture at 4 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery on

Diversity in Action: Connecting the Classroom to the Community.
”
Smith, who is a lecturer at Marquette University, will talk about his community-driven effort for inclusion in local media and tips on how to create an environment of collaboration between faculty and students. His visit is sponsored by the J-School

Tech sales careers to be discussed:
The KU Sales Program will host a mini-tech sales panel from 2 to 3 p.m. April 3 at Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 104.
Todd Vincent
of Dell will moderate the event, designed to share careers available in tech sales. Panelists will include representatives from Dell, eSolutions, mySidewalk, Cisco, Conference Technologies and Sprint. Students will be able to ask questions about working in the industry.

, chief Washington correspondent for CBS News, will discuss his career in journalism, the twists and turns of covering our nation’s highest office, and his latest book, “Mr. Trump’s Wild Ride,” at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Dole Institute of Politics. With over two decades of experience reporting on the White House, Garrett has covered four presidencies for three news outlets. Tom Murphy Fellowship application deadline April 8
|
The deadline to apply for the 2019 Tom Murphy Fellowship Program is noon, April 8. The program is designed to develop and enrich a recent KU graduate (Class of 2019) interested in pursuing a career in sports and entertainment marketing at Octagon. The competitive position provides the opportunity to work at a leading global marketing agency to learn from top experts in the field. The fellowship in Chicago pays $2,700 per month from June 17 to Dec. 17, 2019. Interested students should

KU undergraduates are invited to enter the
Whitcomb Essay Contest
to win a $500 prize. Submit an essay of 3,000 words or less about the relationship of knowledge, thought and action in public affairs and public policy before April 12.

Students are encouraged to apply for more than $11,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. Gridiron is put on by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Deadline is April 5.

, 1974 J-School graduate, has been named the 2019 recipient of the Dole Humanitarian Award. The award, from the
KU Department of Special Educatio
n, in collaboration with the Dole Institute of Politics, honors individuals who have had a direct effect on parents and families. London has led national initiatives to support families of individuals with learning and attention issues, and she helped launch Understood.org.
