Please Join us the annual  Hep B United Philadelphia Coalition Luncheon on Thursday, May 16th from 12:00PM -1:30PM at Sang Kee Duck House (238 N 9th Street, Philadelphia) in Chinatown . We will be highlighting updates on Pennsylvania Viral Hepatitis elimination planning, hepatitis B and the opioid crisis and discriminatory drug pricing for hepatitis B medication.

Upcoming Webinar
Join Hep B United and NAACHO for their second webinar in a 3-part series! To coincide with National Infant Immunization Week (April 27 – May 4) and Hepatitis Awareness Month (May), this webinar will focus on perinatal HBV transmission. Participants will hear about the importance of the national Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program, as well as hear from a local health department that NACCHO has recognized for its innovative strategies to prevent perinatal HBV transmission. At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Communicate the importance of perinatal HBV prevention to the larger goal/strategy of HBV elimination
  • Characterize national efforts to address perinatal HBV prevention in collaboration with state and local departments of health
  • Describe a local health department’s innovative strategy to increase the identification of infants born to chronic HBV infected mothers

NOhep World Hepatitis Day Google Doodle
Join NOhep in requesting that Google mark World Hepatitis Day, July 28th, with a Google Doodle sketch to commemorate Dr. Barry Blumberg - the man who discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed the hepatitis B vaccine!

A  Google Doodle   is a temporary change to the Google logo on its homepages commemorating holidays, events, achievements and people. Since 2010, Google Doodles have also hyperlinked to search results for the subject of the Doodle, making them a great way to reach new audiences and raise awareness.

This World Hepatitis Day, NOhep wants a Google Doodle to recognize Barry Blumberg. In 1964, Blumberg discovered the hepatitis B virus. Finding that hepatitis B can cause liver cancer, he and his team later developed a screening test used to prevent transmission of the virus via infected blood donations. Then in 1969, he developed the vaccination for hepatitis B. This vaccine was the first-ever ‘cancer vaccine’. It has prevented more cancer deaths than any other intervention in history, and to ensure that as many lives were saved as possible, Blumberg freely distributed his vaccine patent.
During 2019, we are highlighting a unique patient story each month. Our #justB Storytelling Campaign is a national effort to bring individuals affected by hepatitis B to share their stories to shed light on this serious disease, decrease stigma, discrimination, and promote the importance of testing and treatment for hepatitis B. If you want to host a screening of the videos, we can help! Michelle focuses her story on the experience of caring for her husband Peter, who went from feeling relatively healthy to being in a medically-induced coma due to liver failure. She speaks of the anxiety she felt as their family waited to find out whether an appropriate donor could be found, and the relief they experienced once Peter was approved for a liver transplant. Michelle acknowledges that while the medical team was top notch, what made the difference through the process was the ongoing support of their extended family.
