Tax Sale
Notice is hereby given that the following properties will be sold at PUBLIC AUCTION by the Treasurer of the Municipality of the County of Cumberland on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 10:00am unless, before the date of the tax sale, the total amounts as indicated are paid in full.

The Tax Sale will be held at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre located at 6 Main Street, Springhill, Nova Scotia.

Bidder registration will begin at 9:00am and the sale will start at 10:00am.

Job Posting - Operations Manager

Deadline for resumes July 9, 2018

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland is currently accepting resumes for the position of Operations Manager. The Operations Manager develops, coordinates, and oversees the completion of capital projects. This position also manages the operations of the Public Works Departments and provides technical mentoring to the Operations Supervisors. This position will play a key role in developing the Municipality's asset management plan. This position is located in Springhill. 

Deadline for resumes is Monday, July 9, 2018 at 1:00pm.

New and Updated Solid Waste By-Law
Solid Waste By-Law
On April 5, 2018 the Municipality of Cumberland By-Law 18-02 (Solid Waste By-Law) came into effect. All former Solid Waste By-Laws were repealed, including those of Springhill and Parrsboro, partially to accommodate the switch to dual stream recycling.

This new Solid Waste By-Law also includes significant changes including, but not limited, to:
Section 35 - Burning Solid Waste - new section added.
Section 37 - Maximum illegal dumping fine increased to $10,000.00.
Section 40 - Cleanup and other remedial costs of illegal dumping will now be added to any fine imposed by the Court. - new section added.

Low Income Tax Exemption 
Low Income Application now available
The Municipality of Cumberland Income Exemption provides assistance to homeowners to help pay their residential property taxes.  Qualified applicants will receive a credit which is applied directly to their tax account
 
To qualify:
  • The ratepayer must own and occupy the assessed property as their principal residence
  • Annual income from all sources for the 2017 calendar year for all household members must be equal to or less than $20, 803
  • The Municipality requires a copy of the prior year's Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment for all household members prior to approving an application
The exemption value:
  • When the total household income is less than $18,373 the exemption shall be $314.
  • When the total household income is between $18,374 and $20,803 the exemption shall be $217.
Please Note: Hosehold income is based on line 150 of the income tax Notice of Assessment

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland Council will meet  during the month of July on the following date:

July 25, 2018 at approximately 6:00pm

The Council Sessions will be held at the Upper Nappan Service Centre Council Chambers.

Holly Berry wins Youth Entrepreneur Award for Cumberland
Councillor Don Fletcher would like to congratulate Holly Berry from Advocate Harbour on winning the Youth Entrepreneur Award for Cumberland on June 6, 2018. The event was sponsored by the Cumberland Business Connector, Community Business Development Corporations, and the Municipality of the County of Cumberland. Congratulations Holly!

Fraser sisters win gold at provincial track meet
Councillor Fletcher would also like to congratulate Denver and Gabby Fraser from Advocate Harbour on winning gold at the provincial track meet. Congratulations Denver and Gabby!

Community Bike Drive
Bike Maintenance Training
The County has been collecting bicycles for a Community Bike Drive in Springhill. In addition to being able to give these bicycles a new home, we were also able to provide some training to local high school students.

The Bicycle Specialist trained ten students from Springhill High School in basic bicycle maintenance. These students spent the afternoon with us going over the bicycles and getting hands on experience in preparing these  bikes to get back on the road.
Recognition
Cumberland Snowmobile Club is Recognized Far and Wide as Outstanding
In November 2017, the Cumberland Snowmobile Club was named the Snowmobile Association of Nova Scotia's outstanding snowmobile club for 2017.
 
In June, they were recognized by the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations as the Snowmobile Club of the Year in Canada.
 
They were also named the International Snowmobile Club of the Year and will be inducted into the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame in Eagle River, Wisconsin, in September.

Building Vibrant Communities Grant Program 2018-19 
The Building Vibrant Communities (BVC) Grant Program is now accepting applications.

Please note, this year the program themes have changed. Applicants will be required to demonstrate in their application how their project relates to one or more of these themes: 
  • Children
  • Housing
  • Mental Health and Addictions
  • Economic Inclusion (Workforce Attachment)
Similar to last year, organizations may make multiple applications for separate projects.
For organizations requesting $5000 and less, partnership is not required.
For organizations requesting $5001-$50,000, confirmation of partnerships with at least two (2) other organizations will be required.

Completed applications must be received by  11:59pm July 24, 2018.

We are pleased to inform you that Jumpstart has once again partnered with Lace 'Em Up Foundation. This is an opportunity that will allow families to request up to an additional $1,000 for hockey registration fees from Lace 'Em Up Foundation for next season, above and beyond Jumpstart support.

Culture Innovation Fund
The Culture Innovation Fund invests in initiatives and projects carried out by organizations, partnerships, and collaborations working to use creativity and our diverse culture to address social issues and opportunities within communities.
The fund also supports initiatives intended to strengthen the role of Nova Scotia's museums and libraries.

When you submit your proposal to the Culture Innovation Fund, you will need to demonstrate how your project(s) will achieve any of the following:
  • Further the objectives of Nova Scotia's Culture Action Plan: Creativity and Community.
  • Foster creativity, diversity, and cultural expression.
  • Enhance the well-being of Nova Scotians and our communities in various ways, including

Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Community Programming 
The Community Programming award recognizes small or volunteer-led community organizations for innovative programs or initiatives that encourage public engagement in Canadian history.

The Prize:   Two recipients (French and English) will receive $2,500 each, and a trip for two to Ottawa to receive their award at the Governor General's History Awards at Rideau Hall in the fall. Recipients also attend the Canada's History Forum and the History-Makers Celebration Dinner, held in conjunction with the awards.
