Dear Friends,

One of our favorite and most loyal friends/customers passed away recently, and as I reflected on her life and her strong connection to the bookstore, I was reminded of how "community" is such an important part of our lives.  Jean Miller, who died at age 90, lived an incredibly rich and productive life, and easily would have won the award for having attended the most author events in the Northshire's 42 year history. We were part of her life, and the community of authors, books, readers, staff, friends old and new, all contributed to enrich her life.  We are often asked how a bookstore our size can exist in a small town in Vermont, and it always seems to come back to community. It is a basic human need to feel supported by a community with whom you share common values. Jean came to the bookstore because even as a beloved teacher, school head, chair of several boards, and concerned citizen, she still felt the desire to learn from and be with others who shared her curiosity.  It is gratifying to know that the bookstore helped fulfill the need for community in Jean's life.

Have a wonderful summer!

by Anne Tyler

Willa Drake, uneasily drifting on the placid stream of advancing age with her second husband, impulsively leaves her comfortable home in Arizona for the mean streets of Baltimore. While caring for the child of her son's former girlfriend, who has been left alone after her mother was hospitalized for a gunshot wound, Willa rediscovers the purpose that had evaporated out of her own life. The author's gift for making gentle, beautifully understated observations about the tenacity and the frailties of human connections is evident throughout. I always feel a little wiser when I finish one of Anne Tyler's books.

by Lynn Vincent & Sara Vladic

For the better part of a century, the story of USS Indianapolis  has been understood as a sinking tale. The reality, however, is far more complicated--and compelling. Now, for the first time, thanks to a decade of original research and interviews with 107 survivors and eyewit-nesses, Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic tell the complete story of the ship, her crew, and their final mission to save one of their own.
A sweeping saga of survival, sacrifice, justice, and love,  Indianapolis  stands as both groundbreaking naval history and spellbinding narrative--and brings the ship and her heroic crew back to full, vivid, unforgettable life. It is the definitive account of one of the most remarkable episodes in American history.

by Naomi Novik

This is the Jewish feminist fairy tale that I didn't know I needed. A beautifully lyrical re-interpretation of Rumpelstiltskin, this novel is told in multiple voices as characters in a mythical eastern European land fight against the strictures that control their lives and take away their choices. Complex, beautifully written, and completely absorbing, this is a book I will return to over and over.

by  Libby Page

charming, heartwarming novel about the importance of community and multi-generational connections.
Kate is suffering with mental health issues, and is isolated from her family in a big bustling city, trying to make her mark as a journalist. When she is given a seemingly uneventful story to pursue, about a local lido that is closing, she is surprised to discover a bigger picture, one that will change her life for the better. What she finds is a vibrant community, everyone working and living together like family, and the lido at its heart. Now, the fight is on, to save the lido, and all it means.

by Fatima Farheen Mirza

Mirza evokes with equal skill and nuance the specifics of the first and second generation immigrant experience, and the universal themes of family unity and discord. In A Place For Us she captures the complicated dynamics of one family's relationships with one another with astonishing insight. I found it tremendously moving in a way that only the most authentic stories and voices can be. The last seventy pages buckled my knees. How can a story about characters who in many ways are so unlike my own be so hauntingly familiar?

by  Michiko Kakutani

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic comes an impassioned critique of America's retreat from reason

The embedding of postmodern theory into contemporary society that, warped and degraded by politics, has so broken and divided us into our own bubbles and factions, resulting in the renowned importance of personal truths away from any sole objective truths is what's at the heart of Kakutani's well researched analysis on our modern crisis. Thoroughly absorbing and undoubtedly important.

This fun, funny and fanciful joke book showcases the principle, Laugh to Learn. First of all, giraffes are, by nature, funny creatures and so the jokes play off of the height of giraffes and their long long necks and their smiles and horns and friendly appearance. The book also showcases the myriad of ways artists have created giraffe sculptures, with wonderful photographs from the authors' giraffe collection.

While it is surprising to many people, giraffes face extinction; there are only 100,000 giraffes at present in the wild, and their population has been declining in recent years. A portion of the net profits from this book go to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which co-sponsored this book, to help them in their efforts to save giraffes. Enjoy Laugh Learn

Finding True North: A History of One Small Corner of the Adirondacks

Thursday,

Join us for an evening with author, actor and storyteller Fran Yardley as she shares the story behind her book "Finding True North."

In 1968 Fran and Jay Yardley, a young couple with pioneering spirit, moved to a remote corner of the Adirondacks to revive the long-abandoned but historic Bartlett Carry Club, with its one thousand acres and thirty-seven buildings. The Saranac Lake-area property had been in Jay's family for generations, and his dream was to restore this summer resort to support himself and, eventually, a growing family. Fran chronicles their journey and, along the way, unearths the history of those who came before, from the 1800s to the present. Offering an evocative glimpse into the past, Finding True North traces the challenges and transformations of one of the world's most beautiful, least-celebrated places and the people who were tirelessly devoted to it.
