Dear Friends,
One of our favorite and most loyal friends/customers passed away recently, and as I reflected on her life and her strong connection to the bookstore, I was reminded of how "community" is such an important part of our lives. Jean Miller, who died at age 90, lived an incredibly rich and productive life, and easily would have won the award for having attended the most author events in the Northshire's 42 year history. We were part of her life, and the community of authors, books, readers, staff, friends old and new, all contributed to enrich her life. We are often asked how a bookstore our size can exist in a small town in Vermont, and it always seems to come back to community. It is a basic human need to feel supported by a community with whom you share common values. Jean came to the bookstore because even as a beloved teacher, school head, chair of several boards, and concerned citizen, she still felt the desire to learn from and be with others who shared her curiosity. It is gratifying to know that the bookstore helped fulfill the need for community in Jean's life.

First of all, giraffes are, by nature, funny creatures and so the jokes play off of the height of giraffes and their long long necks and their smiles and horns and friendly appearance. The book also showcases the myriad of ways artists have created giraffe sculptures, with wonderful photographs from the authors' giraffe collection.
While it is surprising to many people, giraffes face extinction; there are only 100,000 giraffes at present in the wild, and their population has been declining in recent years. A portion of the net profits from this book go to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which co-sponsored this book, to help them in their efforts to save giraffes. Enjoy Laugh Learn
