Research, Publications and Presentations
Professor Chuck Marsh ’s paper “Humean Identity and the Multidisciplinary ‘Problem of Cooperation’” has been accepted for presentation at the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Eighteenth Century Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland, in July 2019. Scottish philosopher David Hume was among the first scholars to pursue the idea that self-interest motivates humans to aid and cooperate with one another.

IMC program director and faculty member Matt Tidwell presented his research project “Priming the pump: Does providing information before a crisis communications simulation provide a better learning experience?” at the 2019 International Crisis and Risk Communications Conference at the University of Central Florida on March 13.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas wrote an  article  in Slate magazine last week on the lawsuit filed by Rep. Devin Nunes against Twitter and several anonymous Twitter parody accounts (including one by “Devin Nunes’ Cow”) for over $250 million. The article focuses primarily on the parody aspects of the suit and points out that not only is parody highly protected in First Amendment jurisprudence, but Twitter has  terms of service  that allow for these accounts as long as it’s clear that they are parody.

A research manuscript co-authored by Associate Professor Mugur Geana Science in the Heartland: Exploring determinants of offering cancer clinical trials in rural-serving community urology practices ,  has been accepted for publication in the journal Oncologic Urology. The study, funded by an external grant, conducted a comprehensive assessment of patient and provider barriers and facilitators driving accrual to cancer clinical trials. The published research was the stepping stone for the development of the Learn-Inform-Recruit intervention, focused on increasing referrals by urologists to cancer clinical trials. Assistant Professor Teri Finneman was a panelist with professors from political science and communications at a Women s Impact on the 2018 and 2020 Elections event last Friday sponsored by the Dole Institute of Politics.

Students take a field trip to teach technology and social media
Students in Assistant Professor Teri Finneman s Social Media in Strategic Communication class were the teachers last week when they visited Meadowlark Estates Gracious Retirement Living in Lawrence to talk to the residents about social media and how to use technology.
Student completes website project for Department of English
An interactive timeline project done by journalism student Mona Ahmed for the fall 2018 session of J500 Digital Media Tools went live on the KU Department of English’s website this month. The interactive timeline tells the story of The Project on the History of Black Writing and can be found on the HBW website . Ahmed used  Knight Lab  storytelling tools to create the timeline and worked with KU Information Technology to get the timeline posted.
Students visit Service Management Group in Kansas City

Presentation skills workshop: Mike Vrabac is offering a workshop titled Tell & Sell Your Story on April 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 100. The workshop is designed for students pursuing careers in strategic communication, marketing, business or news and information. DIAG Lecture: Ron Smith , editor the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service and former managing editor for news at USA Today, will visit the J-School on April 9 and give a lecture at 4 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery on Diversity in Action: Connecting the Classroom to the Community. Smith, who is lecturer at Marquette University, will talk about his community-driven effort for inclusion in local media and tips on how to create an environment of collaboration between faculty and students. His visit is sponsored by the J-School s Diversity and Inclusion Action Group.

The next meeting of the Experimental Research Club is on Wednesday, April 3, at 5:15 p.m., at the ERML Lab, 116 Stauffer-Flint Hall.

Tom Murphy Fellowship application deadline April 8
The deadline to apply for the 2019 Tom Murphy Fellowship Program is noon, April 8. The program is designed to develop and enrich a recent KU graduate (Class of 2019) interested in pursuing a career in sports and entertainment marketing at Octagon. The competitive position provides the opportunity to work at a leading global marketing agency to learn from top experts in the field. The fellowship in Chicago pays $2,700 per month from June 17 to Dec. 17, 2019. Interested students should complete this questionnaire . Kansan seeks summer and fall business managers
Applications are being accepted for the summer and fall business manager positions at the University Daily Kansan/Jayhawk Media Group. The business manager oversees all business-side operations of the Kansan/JMG and works closely with General Manager Rob Karwath on these matters as well as on managing the overall finances of the Kansan/JMG. Applications are due by 5 p.m. March 29 and should consist of:
  • Brief, introductory cover letter
  • Resume
  • Plan for the Kansan/JMG and how you would execute them in your time as business manager

Contests, Awards and Scholarships
 Diversity & You:  The deadline is this week for J-School students to submit photos and videos for the Diversity & You contest. Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views as it affects them and others. First-place winner will receive $400; second place is $200; third place is $100. Deadline is March 29.  Learn more here.

KU undergraduates are invited to enter the Whitcomb Essay Contest to win a $500 prize. Submit an essay of 3,000 words or less about the relationship of knowledge, thought and action in public affairs and public policy before April 12. Learn more here.

Students are encouraged to apply for more than $11,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. Gridiron is put on by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Deadline is April 5. Learn more and apply here.
