Future Park Leaders of Emerging Change (FPL)
Call for Internship Project Proposals
The Future Park Leaders of Emerging Change (FPL) program is now soliciting project proposals from parks, programs, regions, and offices for fully-funded 2018 internships. Proposals will be accepted through 5:00 PM ET Monday, October 30, 2017. Proposed FPL internship projects must focus on emergent management issues in parks arising from global drivers of environmental change, and may address needs associated with the management of natural, cultural, or historic resources, park infrastructure, visitor use, or interpretation and education efforts in a future of novel, rapid, and/or large landscape change.

The Impact of Climate Change on Recreation and Tourism in Park Settings: A Canadian Review
Micah J. Hewer
Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Lecturer in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto (Scarborough)
This study reviews the existing scientific literature on assessing the impact of projected climate change on outdoor recreation and tourism in park settings, based on a national overview on Canadian case studies. The review presents the main findings of previous research to create a synthesis report for policy makers as well as park planners and managers. The review focuses critically on out-dated climate science, model limitations and areas of the country not yet represented.

Micah Hewer is currently employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Lecturer in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto (Scarborough). Dr. Hewer earned his PhD in Physical Geography at the University of Toronto (St. George Campus), where we studied the statistical relationship between daily weather and zoo attendance in Toronto and conducted formal climate change impact assessments on visitor attendance to the Toronto Zoo. Previously, he earned a Master of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo, where he studied the relationship between weather and camping in Ontario's provincial parks, while also assessing the potential impacts of projected climate change of park visitation in Ontario.

Climate Fundamental Academy Workshop #3

The third workshop in the Climate Fundamentals Academy series positions participants to develop strategic application skills in analyzing and quantifying climate related risks, establish a framework for an organizational/regional adaptation plan, and understand relevant public health implications.
Through a standing agreement between the Climate Change Response Program and the ACCO, NPS employees are invited to attend Climate Fundamentals Academy Workshops for FREE. Attendance at earlier workshops is not a prerequisite for participation. Full details and registration are available through the

Save the Date: Interpreting Climate Change
2-Day Earth to Sky Workshop at the NAI National Conference

Spokane, Washington and the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge
This two-day, highly interactive workshop will join interpreters and NASA science and education specialists to learn from each other about climate science and communication.
This workshop is a pre-conference session at the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) National Conference. A registration fee will apply. The first day of the workshop will be held at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, and the second will be at the conference hotel. Transportation from the conference hotel to the refuge will be provided, as well as lunch on both days.
Target Audience
Employees from the NPS, USFS, USFWS, and other federal, state, and municipal agencies, as well as non-profit and private organizations
with science communicators, interpreters, environmental educators and education specialists.
