The History Center in Tompkins County is offering a Youth Ambassadors Pilot Program, which will bring together local youth to explore key themes from our history and gain experience in using a historical framework to connect our past, present and future. This is a great opportunity for the youth to learn
about our local history, t

iscuss current issues and explore how the past may be used as a tool to foster

Our Community Display:
The Story of Reggae in Ithaca, NY
Emanating from Jamaica in the years following its independence from the colonial subjugation of England in 1962, an abandoned slave plantation electrified its folk music and church hymnals to begin the story that is known today as reggae music.
Current Exhibits
While in the midst of packing and getting ready for the move to our new home, The History Center still offers exhibits and displays, including "The Maps of Tompkins County" (Main Gallery), "The Many Names of Fall Creek" (former Map Room), "Town of Ithaca: Early Days" (Municipality Display Case), "Ladies' Accessories Display" (Main Gallery). Please come to take a look at the current exhibits on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Women Will Vote: Winning Suffrage in New York State

Women Will Vote celebrates the 2017 centenary of women's right to full suffrage in New York State. Susan Goodier and Karen Pastorello highlight the activism of rural, urban, African American, Jewish, immigrant, and European American women, as well as male suffragists, both upstate and downstate, that led to the positive outcome of the 1917 referendum. Goodier and Pastorello argue that the popular nature of the women's suffrage movement in New York State and the resounding success of the referendum at the polls relaunched suffrage as a national issue. If women had failed to gain the vote in New York, Goodier and Pastorello claim, there is good reason to believe that the passage and ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment would have been delayed.

the Women's Suffrage Exhibit at the Public Library, Karen Pastorello, co-author of Women Will Vote: Winning Suffrage in New York State, will speak at the History Center in Tompkins County on Friday, July 6 at 6:00 PM. Pastorello will discuss how women in New York State struggled for over six decades to win the right to vote. She will highlight the grassroots activism of rural, urban, African American, Jewish, immigrant, and native-born women who formed a loose coalition aimed at attaining full suffrage for women.
Ithaca Heritage Free Guided Walking Tours

Ithaca Heritage, a collaboration between Historic Ithaca and The History Center in Tompkins County, has launched its inaugural series of free guided walking tours last Friday, June 29. The next tour is on Friday, July 6th at 4:00 PM, meeting at the Trolley Circle on the Ithaca Commons. Cycle the Erie Canal is Coming!
July 8 to 15 (Erie Canalway Trail)
More than 700 cyclists from 37 states and four countries are about to pedal 400 miles from Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canalway Trail, July 8-15. The 20th anniversary ride is organized by Parks & Trails New York. Communities will roll out the welcome mat as riders from ages 6 to 82 come to town. Hometown hospitality is one of the hallmarks of the ride, as is the beautiful scenery, a relaxed pace, and the historic nature of the Erie Canalway Trail.
Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor is the ride's Heritage Sponsor. Executive Director Bob Radliff and Program Manager Brian Yates will join the ride this year. Click here to see the full 8-day schedule.

Tompkins County Public Library invites the public to learn about the Curiosities of the Finger Lakes with author Melanie Zimmer. Saturday,
Melanie Zimmer, author of local history books such as Curiosities of the Finger Lakes and Myths, Legends, Lore: Central New York and the Finger Lakes, will tell true stories about the weird and wonderful history of the greater Ithaca area. She has been a storyteller for over two decades, presenting her stories in schools, libraries, at festivals and for television audiences.
This event is free and open to the public.

Lecturer in Character as Elizabeth Cady Stanton
(Friday, July 27, 2018, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM, in the Library's Ezra Cornell Reading Room)
In conjunction with the exhibit, Recognizing Women's Right to Vote in New York State, on display at TCPL from July 8-27, Cayuga College history lecturer Melinda Grube will speak in character as Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Her topic will be the struggle for women's suffrage in New York State. The lecture will include local history of the Suffrage movement and will also touch upon other subjects covered in the exhibit. The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
Melinda Grube is a history lecturer at Cayuga Community College and gives lectures as Elizabeth Cady Stanton for the National Women's Rights Historical Park and Seneca Falls Convention Days as well as libraries, museums, and universities across the state.

Frank Gannett Bust.

This life sized bronze bust was presented to Frank Gannett in 1940 "in appreciation of [his] outstanding qualities as man, citizen, and employer" by his co-workers who "inscribed in marble and bronze this permanent record of their high regard and affection." Gannett was born near Rochester and grew up in Bolivar. He first arrived in Ithaca as a freshman at Cornell, having won a competitive scholarship. While a full time student, he had five part time jobs in addition to his position as editor of the Cornell Sun and campus reporter for the Ithaca Journal. Before he submitted his first article for the Journal, he was given a list of names and businesses that were never to appear in the paper. If an event occurred in front of a store that did not advertise with the Journal, he was supposed to report that it had occurred across the street or next door to give publicity to advertisers.
